  • Supplements??

So i was just reading this post that was more in depth of the atkins diet, and it stated this "Dr. Atkins referred to a "triad" or "3 legged stool", in the DANDR. Supplements are a part of the triad along with the Atkins WOE and Exercise."

which is true, well im doing the diet as well as the exercise, now i need the supplement. Does anyone have any recommendations as to what supplements to take? i was thinking about the omega 3, but is there any other ones that are good for you and that can also help you lose weight as well?

I don't take supplements to help me "loose weight" ... I do take some for good health.

In general, a supplement will only help you lose weight if you are deficient in the nutrient(s) it provides. An example is carnitine. If you are deficient, then an L-carnitine supplement would help.

Does anyone have any recommendations as to what supplements to take?
I take a multivitamin and fish oil.

You can check your vitamins and minerals in FitDay to see if you are undereating anything. For example, many people have difficulties getting enough potassium, especially during Induction.

You could also discuss this with your doctor. A blood test would tell you more about the supplements you should take.

        Re: Supplements??

I take a Men's multivitamin, as well as an omega complex one, fish oil (omega-3), flax oil (omega-6), and borage oil (omega-9). The EFA's (essential fatty acids, the omega-3,-6,-9) can be found naturally in fatty fishes, salmon, mackeral, sardines. But I'm not a big fish eater and as Americans we are defiecient in EFA's generally. Also EFA's raise HDL, the good cholesterol.

Make sure any mutli you get does not have iron, you will get plenty of that in your meat and dark leafy vegetables on this plan.

        Hope this helps.

So you would need the basic good mulit mineral/vit pill.
I always find I need some more iron (I am weird have a really high iron need), potassium, magnesium usually.
Great that you are getting the third leg there
Don't forget that it is probably best to get things through food so make sure to eat some variety of vegetables.

            Re: Supplements??

This is an great topic and I was wondering the same thing as I'm reading through DANDR.

I've not started the diet yet just trying to understand it for when I do.

Do brands matter at all? I'd personally like to know what y'all are taking. I'm 34 and besides being overweight and prone to headaches I'm pretty healthy. Do i need anything more than a basic multivitamins like Centrum?

              >> Do brands matter at all?>>

You can spend as much money as you like!

I get generic for some things (like my multi and COQ10), and I get Nature Made for other things ... since I can get them in the "Costco" size.

              >>Do i need anything more than a basic multivitamins like Centrum?>>

Centrum has iron ... unless you get Centrum Silver.

And ... they're more expensive than generic.

As to what else to take ... that's your call. As you know from your reading, essential oils are a good thing.

                Re: Supplements??

I take a generic (BJ's brand) that is comparable to GNC's MegaMan Vitamin, it has the normalvits plus several minerals that are not usually found in most vitamins (actually several are listed specifically by the good doctor in the book). The omega complex I take is Natrol's Omega-3,6,9 Complex.
