  • S.O.S. Day 7...no results....suspect calcium supplement

    Hello!
It's my 7th day today...doing Atkins religiously using FitDay to monitor nutrtition. I had a little problem getting calories up high enough yesterday, so if anyone can clue me in on their favorite 'troubleshooter' foods (high calorie no or very low carb) Id appreciate it. My best 'filler' so far seems to be burgers. If it would be helpful to look at my Fit Day foods list my password is 'whatever' and my e-mail is 'mpanebianco11@msn.com'. Now here's where you all might get mad at me but I DO wiegh in every day. Lucky I did, too to spot this trouble. I initially lost 5lbs. the first 2 days of Atkins (so I concluded my metabolism WASN'T resistant...and it's NOT...it's easy for me to lose) and then put everything except 1/2lb BACK ON after beginning supllements on day 3. I'm on Atkins Basic 3 EFA's, Atkins Dietar's Advantage but holding off on Accel till I reach OWL (too much caffeine for induction).
I couldn't find an Atkins Cal-Mag supplement so the health food store staff suggested SOLARAY Calcium Magnesium and the label says "The minerals in this producdt are reacted with whole riceconcentrate rather than ordinary soy, yeast or milk proteins which are commonly used to chelate minerals. The special rice concentrate used by SOLARAY is approximately 7 tiimes higher in amino acid content than ordinary rice and is preferred by many over soy."

Are there any carbs in a mineral supplement? Any supplements? If this is the culprit please suggest a brand besides Atkins that I can use without interfering with Ketosis. By the way, my Atkins Test strips aren't reacting the way they should, either, Not sure I'm even in Ketosis. NO CHEATING even on a mouthful or sip of ANYTHING not allowed. Drinking MEGA water and green tea (decafeinated) and the only sweetener I use is 4 packs of Splenda to sweeten approx 40 oz of my tea. I tried listing sacharin on Fit Day for carb count but it doesn't work, so I'll just have to figure that in my head. Also exercising 5 hours a week half aerobic - hals strength training and I doubt I've built enough lean muscle mass in the last 2 weeks since I started adding strength training to account for the weight.

Please dear Atkins Gurus.....please help me get my cals up over basal so I don't trigger starvation mode, review my foods and find the problem so I can continue the Atkins WOL!

Post the link to your fitday so we can take a look-see.

The thing I see from your post is you are using too much Splenda. You are only allowed 3 servings a day.

You would be surprised how much lean muscle mass you are building. Make sure you are measuring. The scale LIES!!! :nod

Accell isn't appropriate for Induction. The little chart on the box indicates it's only appropriate for OWL and Pre-Maintenance. So good decision on your part.

I'm not familiar with this product, so I really can't comment on it.

Vitamin supplements can contain carbs. They can contain sugar (for flavoring) or they can contain starch. The starch is used to help hold the pills together.

I don't take the Atkins Brand supplements because they are a pain in the rear to take due to their dosing schedule. I count each of my supplements as 1 carb just to make sure I don't underestimate their carb count.

Some people will never register on a ketostix. Check the FAQ forum for the posts about the physical signs of ketosis, ketostix, etc.

Do you drink the entire 40 ounces daily? If so, you are going over your artificial sweetener allotment of 3 servings daily. 1 packet = 1 serving. Also are you counting the carbs in your tea? Depending on your carb counter source, tea has 0.9 to 1 net carb per 8 ounces.

Also exercising 5 hours a week half aerobic - hals strength training and I doubt I've built enough lean muscle mass in the last 2 weeks since I started adding strength training to account for the weight.

When you log into your fitday.com account. Click "Home". It'll bring you to a User Preference page. At the bottom, it will give you the option of making your account public. Click that. Then you can just copy the link to your fitday account and post it here.

In terms of your weight...there's a "sticky" post at the top portion of this forum. The sticky is called "Weight loss is not linear". That will give you some insight to weight loss.

Thanks for the tip on my fitday link!

I'm cutting back sweetener to 3, thanks! But I'm concerned about a prior recommendation to count each supplement as 1 carb. I don't think I CAN do that on induction anyway because follwoing the 'by the book' guidelines for supplementation I's be 13 carbs at the starting gate!!

            3 basic 3 = 3 carbs
            2 efa's 2
            4 Dieters advantage = 4
            4 cal-mag capsules =4

That sounds IMPOSSIBLE!! Now I'm getting scared. :help Did you possibly mean 1 carb for each TYPE of supplement like 1carb for cal and one for all 3 Basics? I'm :confused

Anyone have more help on getting cals up? I searched topics for starvation mode, but they weren't pertinent. Everything I east on Atkins to stay within the carb range seems so low in cals.

Also I am measuring as well and they reflect the weight gain. Total of one inch lost and regained on my waist.

              Uh-oh. I didn't explain that well..

The Atkins brand supplements have no sugars/carbs. So if you are using them, you don't have anything to count in terms of carbs. I don't use the Atkins brand supplements because I find that the dosing on them (3 times a day, 2 times a day, etc.) is too confusing for me and I don't have the patience for that.

Since I use non-Atkins brands, I count my supplements as 1 carb each, just to make up for whatever carbs they migh have in them.

Your fitday menu for today doesn't look bad at all.

                Hi Atkins50, :wave

You've gotten some good advice and I can understand your frustration but I have to tell you at this point of time it's self induced.

If you've read your copy of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution than you should know, and know by heart a few non negotiable realities about this WOL.

Induction is a for most people with less than fifty pounds to lose a two week period of time for you're body to adjust to being in ketosis. In addition this time is set aside to break addictions to carbohydrates, caffeine and of course sugar.

You can't tally up your progress in a mere seven days time by scale readings. There are reasons Dr. Atkins and people who are successful on his diet urge you to avoid scales and especially daily weigh ins. If you want to continue to ignore the voice of experience - go right ahead, but expect a good deal of unnecessary heartache and frustration.

The real questions are how are you feeling? How do your clothes fit? How is your energy level? sleep patterns? overall feeling of well being? Are you experiencing induction flu? if so how bad?

The scale, especially at this point in your Atkins journey is meaningless.

As far as supplements ~ you have to read the labels very carefully. Steer clear of most what I call "supermarket" Brands like one -day and Centrum. As an example One-A-Day CarbSmart is loaded with corn starch and Dextrose (sugar)

TwinLabs, Solgar, Puritan, Nature Made and The Vitamin Shoppe all make Iron, carb and sugar free multi vitamins. In addition you might want to add an Omega 3 in either fish or flax oil 1500 - 3,000 IU capsules three times a day. Omega 3 oils in addition to being great for your heart - help your body to burn fat.

Another supplement to consider adding is L-Carnitine - it helps many people, even those with a slow metabolism to burn more fat and burn it faster. Dr Atkins started most of his patients on 1500 mg a day and quickly moved them up to 5,000 mgs a day - I take 4,000 and believe it helps a great deal.

I hope you'll do yourself a favor and get rid of that scale, at least for the next week and perhaps instead of weighing yourself next time you'll consider taking your measurements.

A few weeks ago I felt awful because I did weigh myself, I've been on induction for eight weeks, not a single cheat, walking three miles a day and the scale hadn't budged an inch. I remembered the measuring tape and I had lost 2 inches from my chest and a whopping three inches from my waist.

So spare yourself those awful scales, our bodies fluctuate around five pounds a day anyway ~ who needs em?

                Peter ha

                  clarity

Now here's where you all might get mad at me but I DO wiegh in every day. Lucky I did, too to spot this trouble.
First of all, no one on the forum gets mad. But the people who have really stuck to induction and the rules in the book are strict because they know your success and your adaption to this WOL depends on it.

Second of all, your conlusion is totally in error. I see no reason to believe you are in trouble after only seven days.

If you saw someone banging their head on the wall would you not tell them to stop?

Weighing yourself on a daily basis and drawing faulty conclusions from this crippling, self-defeating, masochistic ritual can block you from finding healing and success.

Atkins can heal you. But you have to be willing to disengage from your previous dieting mentality.

This is a journey and there are things you need to learn about yourself that go far beyond the scale.
Suffering is necessary until you realize it is unnecessary. Eckhart Tolle
