  • Net carbs-not sure how to compute?

I thought it was the carbs less the fiber, which would give me 12g, but the bar I have states 3 Net carbs. This is what is on the bar I have it lists:

    Total Carb. 18g
    Fiber 6g
    sugars 1g
    Sugar alcohols 2g
    Protein 17g
    Fat 8g

    How do you compute?

Not sure if you need the calories they are 200. This is one of the Atkin bars that are okay on Induction.

You can't do carbs minus fiber minus sugar alcohols on an Atkins bar!

You have to just use the count given on the package.

That's because of the glycerine, which by law, they can't include on the nutritional label.

You would count the carbs on the front of the label as net carbs... so 3.

In Chapter 19 of DANDR 2002, we are told that net carbs are found by subtracting fiber, sugar alcohols and glycerine from the number of total carbohydrates. Glycerine is not listed on the label though.

The net carbs listed on the Atkins bars are determined by measuring their mean effect on blood sugar, not by using the subtraction method.

In any case, I do not recommend Atkins bars, especially on Induction. Some people have their weight loss stalled or slowed down by them... and eating real, whole foods is usually a better choice.

The FDA says that glycerine should be counted as carbohydrate on the label so the companies that makes protein bars have to list the total carbs. The protein bar makers like the Atkins company tries to get around it by listing something they call "Net Atkins Count" on the front.
So what do we think about his. Personally I am very skeptical - even if this is not carbs they do have calories and they are very sweet so you can really buzzy from these bars.
And many stall from them. We really recommend not including them on induction - they contain illegal ingredients if you follow Atkins 2003. Maybe as an emergency.

I agree with Liv - check the ingredients to decide if any product (labelled 'lowcarb' or not) is suitable for your phase of Atkins.
Also, if the sugar alcohols in it do not give you the 'bathroom effect' then your body is processing them as if it is sugar, so you really need to count the carbs from the SA , making your bar 5 net carbs!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Thank you all for your responses. I was very confused with the Atkins bars. I'm not planning on eating them during the induction period, but did buy one just to keep with me in case I was somewhere and was tempted to eat something I shouldn't. Just in case of an emergency situation

When I was on induction I used to keep an ounce of unsalted unroasted almonds in a small airtight container with me as 'emergency rations' thinking they weould be a better 'cheat' than an Atkins chocolate bar but I never needed to eat them.
Unless you are out in the middle of nowhere is is often simple to go into a shop and buy some cooked meat and/or cheese plus a bag of salad leaves and a small mayonnaise jar. You can even slip a couple of those little packs of mayo from a restaurant into your pocket. They keep a few days unopened in the car without a fridge.
And most restaurants or cafés can adapt their usual offerings to suit most dietary needs. You soon get used to saying - "can I have a salad (no carrots or croutons) or extra brocolli instead of the fries or "no gravy on the roast meat but can I have some butter or sour cream to go with it".

I would be very careful of the ingredients ... it's very often got HFCS. It's not always the same mayonnaise as from the jar ... even if it's the same company.
