  • 3 cups of lettuce

    hello, i am starting atkins today and i decided i would go over to the salad bar for lunch and make a salad. can someone give me an idea of how much 3 cups of lettuce is? i don't have measuring cups on me and i am having trouble trying to visualize how much that actually is. im thinking maybe the smaller tin.

    is 3 cups about a bowl full?

    bowls come in different sizes too.

    do you know how big a baseball is? if so that should be about a cup of saladsize.
    we don't eat our entire 3 cups at any one meal though.
    you should be able to find cheese eggs and some diced ham on that salar bar along wiht maybe some olives so you could get some fats and proteins to go with your veggies.

      i didn't see anywhere in the book where it said that you couldn't eat all 3 cups at one meal. why shouldn't you eat all your veggies at one meal?

        if you look in the sample menu in chapter 11 induction you will see those veggies spread out to all meals.

        think of your body as a very fine engine. ideally you'd like to be running on the same "octane" all the time so you have a stable blood sugar a stable amount if insulin being secreeted and a stable amount of fatty acids being burned and stored. the food you eat can shift that balance if it contain differing amounts of fats proteins and carbs in relationship to each other.
        by started from day one in induction to have a small amount of your carbs at each feeding you will be balancing the insulin response for the day and not have a spike after one meal storing the fats instead of allowing body fat to be liberated for making energy.

          Keep in mind that 3 cups of lettuce isn't getting MOST of your daily net carbs from Induction vegetables.

          You need more vegetable nutrition than 3 cups of lettuce.

            so you are saying i could have 3 cups of lettuce at lunch and then have maybe some brocolli with my dinner? i read the induction chapter of the book twice because i really want to make sure i do this right for the best results. all your help is appreciated. thanks.

              The limit is 3 cups total ... so you should cut down on the lettuce so you have room for the other vegetables.

                so i should do about 1 cup of veggies/lettuce with breakfast, a cup with lunch, and then a cup with dinner?

                great. thank you both for the tip. like i said i really want to do this right. i took off 50 pounds with atkins from last july til october and then gained it all back. i can't stress how bad i want to do it properly this time so i appreciate the tips.

                  that would be a great start and when you get to OWL you can add even more of them to each meal so you are balanced. or you could say some for your snacks if you are a snacker.
