  • Just Looking For Sympathy

Not even sure if I posted in the right place ..., so apologies to begin with if I have not.

I think I have the Atkins Flu!!! I never ven knew what that was until someone at Fatsecret reponded to a post of mine in which I asked if it was normal to be nauseus, but which in mid-post I had to change to is it normal to "regurgitate" which is what I did about fifteen minutes ago and feel like I am going to do again . . .

Is there anything I can do or take to alleviate the terrible nausea ?

And, yes, sympathy, much sympathy is needed ... <kidding> but some kind of remedy WOULD help please as I can truly say I have NEVER felt THIS bad - even with the 'real' flu. Please help!

Induction Flu is common: alots of folks have withdrawal symptoms from carbs initially, then it improves.

You might want to post your menu (including the amounts of the foods you are eating) because a common mistake is to eat nearly 0 carbs daily and/or eat very low calorie. One notorious "low carb" diet used to boost that it was normal and desirable to be "semi-nauseous all the time"---of course, it's neither normal nor desirable to be that.

So post your menues and to make sure you aren't doing Atkins the wrong way.

I was sucked into that diet in 2006. I had experimented with atkins before that, but never had read the whole book. I lost around 70 lbs really fast, but it was because I was starving my self. Then, there was no real maintenence plan, so within a year and a half I was heavier than when I started. It was basically a low carb, low fat, low food diet. It was awful. And worse yet, it cost me money to join up. I am so bitter about that. I am grateful for Dr. Atkins because he has built in rewards into this WOE. Just think, if I keep eating clean for another week I can have 5 more veggie carbs a day! Another week after that more dairy, then nuts! Eventually, I can even enjoy a low carb beer or two when I am BBQ'ing! And how about the recipes for low carb cheesecake? I planted som strawberries at my hous so I can have some when I get to that rung. This is awesome! SNATTY my butt!

        Re: Just Looking For Sympathy

Thank you for the responses. Basically I started it on March 4th and stuck to it r.e.l.i.g.i.o.u.s.l.y. (NO carbs). My menu (until the 16th) consisted of lots of bacon, lots of eggs, sausage patties, pork chops, a steak one night, chicken wings like three times, and some crab legs with butter another night, oh and egg-salad (eggs, a tiny bit of mayo and seasoning), once. Then, on the 16th I went a little off the reservation: I had about a cup of coffee with 1/2 a splenda and one or two teaspoons of powdered creamer, a chef salad with italian dressing then in the evening I made myself egg-foo-yung (sp?) with little pieces of pork, a bit of shredded cabbage and eggs. Yesterday, the 17th, I had 1+ cups of stew meat (just the meat) and 1/2 a cup of liceberg lettuce at around 12. I also took a Vitamin B pill and an excedrin for a headache. (I had had a steady headache the first three days too, but thought that was over). Then at about 2 or 3 in the aftrenoon I started feeling really sick and just drained. I even went to lay down in an empty office for about 15 minutes. When I got home at around 6p I was still sick and then in the evening (even before the time it says in my original post, I started throwing up and when nothing was left, dry-heaving until after 3:00 a.m. when a triage nurse told me to slowly sip gatorade.

On another note, I think it all stems from being dehydrated. No matter what I try, it is just so very hard for me to make myself drink water!

You are definitely not eating enough vegetables. Are you only having a few bits of lettuce or cabbage a day?

Atkins isn't no carb. It's low carb. Vegetables are definitely a part of the Induction Diet. During Induction, we are allowed to have 3 cups of the Induction vegetables. In fact, the vegetables are to make up more than half of your total carb intake.

Atkins is also high fat, not high protein. From what you've listed, you seem to have been doing a high protein, no carb, low fat diet. That's not Atkins. It seems more like that notorious low carb diet (who's originator is currently being tried in court for fraud) I mentioned earlier.

You really should get a copy of and read Dr. ATkins New Diet REvolution 2002 edition, so you can do Atkins safely and properly.

              Re: Just Looking For Sympathy

              Wow. Okay, I learned something.

I thought the induction period (first 14 days, right?), was NO carbs - nada zilchies. So, I can have veggies? I read the Atkins book before and could have sworn no veggies or fruits were to be introduced until after the first two-week period, and that I could then begin with small amounts of strawberries and broccoli (sp?). Hmmmm.

In as far as high-fat though, I really think I am on the high-side. Everything I eat has fat and the more the better (that's one of my core problems I think. I like fatty foods). I guess I will need to get a copy of the 2002 book because I'm totally confused. In fact, on March 4th I visited my doctor and was at the heaviest I had ever been in my life! 142.5! On the induction I went down to 131 (yesterday) and had been 'stuck' at 133 for two or three days, maybe four, before yesterday. TODAY, I'm at 133.5, so I am pretty sure I'm doing something 'not right'. (I KNOW I am not drinking enough water for one).

Even in the 1972 Diet book, a salad was allowed during the first week and higher carb veg like broccoli was allowed during the second week.

The only diet I know of that didn't allow any veg or fruit is the Stillman diet.

                  Re: Just Looking For Sympathy

Have you got a copy of the 2002 Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution? If so take a look at Chapter 11 for the rules of induction as well as the allowed foods with the limits that apply.
                  One rule is
                  3. Eat no more than 20 grams a day of carbohydrate, most of which must come in the form of salad greens and other vegetables. You can eat approximately three cups-loosely packed-of salad, or two cups of salad plus one cup of other vegetables (see the list of acceptable vegetables on pages 125-126).
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Check out our Low Carb Recipes website and add to it!!

                    Thanks everyone!

Again, I will be getting a copy of it because it says: 'Eat no more than' etc. not that we have to, correct? I mean that is only if we want carbs, we can eat up to 20? And the same with veggies?

Okay, okay, I'll get the book .

Another thing if you don't mind please ... how do I chnage my status from induction to Extended Induction?

                    Thanks again everyone!

BTW Elizellen WOW! Nice work and congrats on the great 'new'(?) you. Very nice.

Atkins has NEVER been about no carbs ... so you haven't been doing Atkins "r.e.l.i.g.i.o.u.s.l.y." ... you've been doing it "w.r.o.n.g."

You go to User CP and then "Edit Your Details".

You shouldn't be doing an Extended Induction though ... you should move to OWL as soon as you find out what a proper Induction is ... I wouldn't do Atkins Induction for more than 2 weeks in your case.
