    Hiya..

day 1 and read the book - just confused about one thing

the net carbs for alcohol in the back state that the likes of white wine are low and vodka is nil...

I know on induction you can't have any at all and thats great..

BUT wondered why it is frowned on after the 14 days if there are little or no carbs?

    Re: alcohol

If you have alcohol in your system, your body will burn that for fuel instead of fat. So as long as you're drinking, you're not burning fat.

Atkins is also about becoming a healthier person. There's nothing nutritious about alcohol.

Also alcohol lowers your resolve and many times will lead to binges and cheats. Harder to say no when you are drinking.

          Re: alcohol

Also, alcohol is added back----during the On-Going Weight Loss (OWL) phase. Don't make the mistake many people do and think that Induction phase is the entire Atkins Diet. Induction is the first of 3 weight loss phases. It is the most restrictive in terms of food and carbs.

If you want to reintroduce alcohol or fruit or even potatoes to your Atkins, move to the OWL Phase on Day 14. Dr. ATkins wrote in the book that the only people who might benefit from extending their Induction are those people who have a high metabolic resistance to weight loss because staying on Induction longer may reverse some metabolic imbalances. So be sure to check your 14 day results with the charts in the book to see what your degree of metabolic resistance is. Don't make the mistake of thinking that since you "only" lost 10 pounds, you have a high metabolic resistance to weight loss. Check the charts. And move on if you would like to add non-Induction foods to your menu.

What would you do if you were an alcoholic?

              Re: alcohol

Alcohol is a social activity between a lot of people. I know personally, I don't have a problem with it, but after induction, I plan on having a vodka/tonic on occasion while out with clients, or playing pool and shuffleboard with friends. I have a rockin' social life and one or two glasses every week, or every other week with my friends isn't going to numb me enough to indulge. It'll help if the bar u go to doesn't have a kitchen.

How do you know what your reaction to alcohol will be on Atkins?

I've done this before. And I know not to get slap happy drunk enough that I can't control my thoughts or actions. 2 Vod/Tonics is my personal limit. I'm 33 years old, my days of waking up on my bathroom floor were over in my Freshman year of college
