  • Food/Carb addiction similar to substance withdrawls

Now, I can't compare the two at all. I can only draw parallels and similarities. I know 1st hand how hard substance abuse is to push through and break. My dear b/f has been in recovery for over 3 years. We've been talking these past few days about some of the issues I've had breaking my carb addiction. Mind you, I'm still in the beginning and on induction, but I can feel my body craving, and practically aching for some sugar. He said when he first went into rehab he literally ached and craved his drug of choice, and even now 3 years later when things get bad he says he'll consider "using", but does what he can to push through it. Like a carb/food addict when I get upset or things get rough I want to binge. I see the correlation with carb addiction is similar, just on a slightly-lesser level. That being said, bad carbs/refined sugar were killing me too, just at a slower pace.

Just like an addict I can't have carbs/sugar/bread etc in the house. We don't keep anything in his house that would re-trigger his addiction either.

He said he has a bit of a "one-up" on me in that he doesn't have to use drugs to live and they're not constantly shoved in his face. However, food is ALL around me, offered to me and sometimes right in my face, and I will have to eat food (proper food) everyday to live.

I write this b/c it was kind of a revelation this afternoon while we were talking about his withdrawal symptoms so many years ago and how they are similar with a carb/food addict withdrawal. He assures me that the symptoms subside, and become dull, then numb after sometime; but like an addict we have to steer clear of our poison like our lives depend on it. B/C they do!

It really only gets easier from here. When I was doing my 14-day induction, I asked my hubs to not eat "illegal" stuff in front of me, and we pretty much cleared the house of any temptations. Now, I can watch him and my family pig out on whatever carby food they like, and I don't even flinch. Just keep it up!

The truth of the matter is, eating disorders of any kind are among the hardest to recover from. You can give up things like cigarettes and beer and never look back. You don't need them to live. Finding the balance with food is hard because you have to eat everyday, several times a day. Making the right choices, instead of the wrong ones, is a decision you have to make over and over again. As someone who has quit smoking, I will say that it was easier quitting smoking, than it has been making the right food choices (and I didn't have an eating disorder).

Stay focused and plan ahead. Planning is one of your strongest allies.

carboholics yes, but it is especially people with eating disorders like anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating.
