  • Spices

    I am a beginner at cooking, and wondering what spices everyone uses...or can be used on induction besides salt and pepper (I use Nosalt salt)....someone i know mentioned garlic seasoning and lemonpepper spices, any other recommended spices i can get from the store? Thanks!

    All spices are fine, as long as there's no sugar (sugar, dextrose, maltodextrin, etc.) added to them.

    The spices I use most often, other than salt and pepper, are cinnamon, basil, fennel seeds, cumin, cayenne, turmeric, mustard seeds, oregano and cilantro.

    I would suggest you look up a few recipes that you'd like to try, see what spices they ask for, and buy those. Then get others as needed.

      I like the Mrs. Dash blends. They're easy. The Italian and extra spicy varieties are excellent on chicken, IMO.

        This is great advice. It's hard to suggest seasonings when we don't know what kind of food you like.

        Some basic herbs/spices that are good to have on hand are onion powder, garlic powder, oregano and cinnamon. As mentioned, Mrs. Dash makes some great mixtures.

        These can be an expensive acquisition if you buy them at your local grocery. Check out pharmacy chains like CVS or other stores for dollar versions of basic herbs/spices. It's an expensive way to try out new flavors before dishing out big $$.

            Yeah, I found out one of my favorite garlic blends had sugar in it! So I gave it away!

            I love Mrs. Dash, and a few other blends....

            My favorite stand-alone spices are: garlic (for anything), ground cumin (for mexican), basil (great for any), cayenne (spicy), Chili powder (chili flavor, BBQ), Cilantro (mexican/salsa), cinnamon (dessert), dill weed (fish, etc), sage (turkey, sausage) and paprika (egg salad/chicken).

            My favorite blends are (watch for sugar in all blends): Cajun seasoning (spicy), lemon pepper (chicken/fish), Spicy spaghetti seasoning (for anything italian), and Italian seasoning (italian)

            Don't forget the all important seasonings that are not spices: Dijon mustard, different vinegars (not balsamic) , flavored oils, lemon/lime juice, and green chilies.

            One of my favorite chicken breast coatings? Parmesan, italian seasoning, paprika, and pepper. Bake or fry till done! If you fry it, the cheese cooks fast so make sure to cut the chicken thin to cook faster.

              any herb and any spice will be legal but you will need to count the carbs in them in your daily limit.
              And as the others said check any spice mix or blend ingredients list to be sure it is sugar free. There are many blends and mixes that have been low carbs you can get recipes for to make your own. I love homemade taco seasoning mix, BAM, and red curry. I took a blackened rub and removed the sugars fom the ingredients list and used it to blacken fish and beef during induction.
