  • Impact of drinking alcohol

    Hey all

Next weekend it's my friend's stag night therefore I will be drinking quite heavily for one night. What impact will this have on my diet? Will it effectively be taking me out of ketosis and I'll have to start over? Or will it have no real impact?

You will likely see a stall if you drink a whole lot. Beer and wine have carbs, and mixed drinks would too if there is juice, so yeah.

You won't need to start over, but if you are bent on tying one on, then just be prepared to see a stall. If you don't, you're lucky!

What day did you start induction? Have you seen any losses yet?

Hey, thanks for your answer. I did the diet for a month last year (Sept 2009) and saw great results. However old habits die hard and I put most of the weight back on so I'm gonna start again tomorrow. So by Saturday I will have done 5 days, if all goes well!

I would wait until after Saturday to start since you know you will be drinking a lot. Alcohol affects you differently when you are ketosis and that could be a dangerous combination. One week won't hurt, use it to get all your foods together and get a plan in place.

As you know, alcohol isn't permitted on Induction. Ketosis and "drinking heavily" isn't a good idea. You might become quite familiar with the porcelain throne.

What I would do if I were you - and I had to go to a party like that I would stick to: Scotch, Whisky, Gin, Tequila, Vodka - any non-sweet hard liquor. I like to drink tequila with lemon juice and selzer - I find it very refreshing. If you HAVE to have it sweet, pop in a sweet-and-low. However, I find the sweeteners bring on my appetite. If you are ok with diet sodas, you could have a rum and diet-coke or whisky and diet-7 up or gin and diet tonic. Vodka and tomato juice isn't too bad of a killer on Atkins - count the carbs in a 1/2 cup of V-8, add the tobasco or worcestershire, it shouldn't be too bad. If you MUST have wine have it very, very dry. But wines can add up carbs quickly as can the beer. A nice glass of selzer with lemon or lime squirted in and gin, vodka or marguerita could be very refreshing, do the job and your pancreas won't go haywire the way it would with a mixed drink. And, stick with the nuts and away from the chips if you HAVE to nosh. Also, celery sticks dipped in salsa. GOOD LUCK!! YOU CAN DO THIS!!!
