  • Why did I step on that scale

Hi everyone - after tackling the terrible craving day, keeping completely legal and staying on track...I weighed myself! I don't even own a scale and decided I was going to stay away from the one at work ...well, I walked by today and couldn't help myself

It says I gained 4 pounds...I know this may not be the true number...I've had two meals, have had 100 oz of water, two cups of coffee and jumped on scale in a full suit and high heels in full swing PMS...gee I wonder why I showed an increase on the scale...

    Why, did I do this

Okay, I have to forget this ever happened. I'm doing what I should be...eating right, drinking lots of water and walking/yoga/moving ...

Right? That's the right way to handle right????

Re: Why did I step on that scale

The scale may only move a little bit.

      This is how I weigh:

First thing in the morning, after using the washroom, ONLY in my skivvies.

I avoid the scale during TOM.

Do NOT give up! My weight can fluctuate 5 to 7 pounds during TOM. Ignore it!

      Good luck

Re: Why did I step on that scale

Don't panic !! I have often weighed up to five pounds more at night than I have in the morning and it can even be more if it is a high weight day for you. We all have high weight days and low weight days and that is the reason I weigh every day and then average for the week because you can actually weight your high day and think you lost nothing for the week. I weight every day, add them up once a week and divide by seven, it gives you the average for the week which you subtract each week from the week before. It is much more accurate and over time you learn your bodies pattern of weight loss.
It does not work for everyone but one thing I can tell you, you will always weigh much more at night then you will when you first wake up , and you were probably dressed when you wieghed since you were just walking by and that can be a pound or several pounds depending on what you are wearing.
so, don't let that number freak you out, if you have to weigh yourself, next time, in the morning before you eat or drink, after you use the bathroom and before you dress for the day, that will be the most accurate weight you can get. Just remember, you will have days you can be as much as three to five pounds heavier depending on so many things, sodium fluid intake, TOM for women , what ever, so always keep an emotional distance from that number, it is only one part of losing weight, inches are the other !!

Unless you weighed yourself on the exact same scale and with the exact same clothes, etc. and had eaten/drunk the exact same things, and it was the same time of day, you're comparing apples and oranges.

Re: Why did I step on that scale

Different scales can vary alot. At one of my doctor's, their scale is off by at least 5 lbs or more. It's best to just use one scale as your weigh in one, and then only with the same factors, such as no clothes, first thing in the morning, etc. to give you something consistent to keep measuring on.

My weight can fluctuate 4-5 lbs a day/week based on if I've eaten and what, what I'm wearing, when I weigh myself and what scale I use.

I highly recommend not getting too obsessed with the number on the scale either. Even when doing everything 100% right, you might not lose lbs every week.

Also, are you measuring? It's a really good idea to track inches as well as those are the best indicator of weight loss.
            Start date: 2/22/04 347/222/135 ~ 5'2"
            STAC Restart: 1/05/09
            306/229/135 ~ 5'2" 77 lbs down!

            Goal #1: 247 - 2nd 10% (59lbs, 247, also 100 lbs total loss) - Met 1/4/10!!!
            Goal #2: 241 - Halfway to goal! (106 lbs lost) - Met 2/21/10!!!

            Goal #3: 222 - 3rd 10% - Lowest Atkins weight
            Goal #4: 210 - Still on track!
            Goal #5: 200/199 - 4th 10% - One-derland! End year goal!
Female/Hypothyroidism/Arthritis/Fibromyalgia - If I can lose weight on this, so can you!

Re: Why did I step on that scale

i have been on atkins for almost a month and refuse to get on the scale. i know dr atkins recommends getting on after the 2 week induction but i am trying to pull off a 4 week induction. i will not get on the scale until next friday, the 23rd.

i am feeling so good. my cardio is up at the gym, i fit into my clothes better and i just feel so much better all around. i did not want to risk getting on the scale and being let down. but i have to be honest because i feel so good i have been just itching to weigh in. that damn scale is more tempting to me right now than any kind of carbs or sugar! i won't do it though. and even when i do i will not be let down no matter what. i feel way too good to let anything, including that nasty scale, bring me down!

Re: Why did I step on that scale

Thanks you guys! I appreciate the support. I also remembered that Monday I definetly ate more processed foods than I normally do. So, I bet the salt was a factor, as well.

I know that I definetly need to 'up' the exercise factor though. I need to get more workout time. I have just been walking with the kids, playing basketball, gardening and some yoga. I think I need to focus on doing more yoga.

Thanks you guys. I appreciate the support that you guys have given.

                Thank you!

Re: Why did I step on that scale

Great attitude. I have yet to have conquered my tortured relationship with the scale so however you can deal with fluctuations and not let it deter you from your improved eating habits, by all means, please do it! I have to stay off the scale for a couple weeks at a time because two weeks out of each month, my weight is affected 5-7lbs by TOM and it can be very discouraging for me. In fact, I should just weigh once a month, right after TOM goes and I haven't done any weight training in the last 4 days lol. Both make me gain water weight and it's not pretty the way I react to such things. I am trying to distance myself from my emotional relationship with the scale but the the only solution I have come up with is to pay most attention to my diet and exercise and put the scale in the closet but once every few weeks and only when the planets have aligned themselves just perfectly - ha ha. Just kidding. I know I would love to be able to weigh everyday and average it out but I am just not distanced enough yet or cerebral-based enough to do that yet lol. Someday I will get there - I hope, there's gotta be a light at the end of my tunnel here! Maybe I should try the daily weight and average at the end of the week thing and see if I am able to keep my head on straight...it sounds like a very good idea in theory because if I do choose to weigh on the one day that I am UP (without knowing it) I think I might lose it! That's just how I am! So I would like to keep my head on straight and just get a hold of myself and my emotions and just BEAT that scale at its own game! Of course I hope you all get my goofy humor here of course. ;-) I am really not a slave to the scale but sometimes it seems like it.

                  Have a great day all!!!

Don't forget to record your measurements too so you can see how your body is losing fat and changing shape even if the scales are not telling you any good news
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
