  • Having appetite and energy problems on induction

Hi all, I started induction 6 days ago and have lost almost 10 pounds, which is great! But I'm having some problems...

Maybe a little history would help. The first time I did Atkins (2002), I lost 60 pounds in a year, but ended up in the ER with congestive heart failure. I don't think it was Atkins...I had congenital defects that (apparently) were only partially corrected with surgery when I was a kid. But, of course, the hospital food was almost all carbs, and that threw me out of ketosis. Since then I gained 40 pounds back, and tried unsuccessfully to re-start Atkins several times. I finally lost 20 lbs about 18 months ago by cutting out wheat and corn (turns out I'm allergic), eating generally healthier, and exercising regularly. But I'd been bouncing around the same 5 or 6 pounds for months and not making any more progress, so decided to go back on Atkins. I was really excited about it, prepped really well (I thought) by getting rid of carb foods in the house, and stocking up on appropriate foods, interesting spices, etc. I read through the induction posts on this forum, and all the other Atkins stuff I could find. I was really inspired! The first few days were good, and I started losing weight immediately, 5 pounds in 4 days. BUT....

The first problem is, I can barely stomach the food. I take a few bites, and...yuck. I'm not THAT bad a cook, and the first few bites usually taste great, but then my stomach (or my brain!) rebels. It's getting hard to look an egg in the eye. I've tried quite a few different things, a number of recipes and different meats, but nothing sounds good. I am really missing fruit (which I ate a lot of before) and that little sweet something after meals.

I'm not crazy about Splenda, so to assuage the sweet craving, I have been allowing myself one chocolate chip (not one serving, just one single solitary chip of organic dark chocolate) twice a day. I'm still in ketosis and losing about a pound per day, but I suppose it could be a problem somehow.

The other problem is that I've had a couple of down days, really down days, when I feel like dog poop with no energy. I've never felt like this on Atkins before. Not sick, just listless, a little dizzy, and downright droopy. And I'm really hungry--though obviously that stems from not being able to eat very much. I'm using an iPhone app to track what I eat, how much exercise, etc. and so far no shortage of calories, but I'm worried about how I can keep it up.

You guys are wonderfully supportive of the newbies, so I'm hoping you have some suggestions. I've thought about moving to OWL (I don't care how fast I lose the weight, only that I lose it!) to give myself more choices. Thanks!!

Wow, Jean, you're losing it fast! Have you tried having a cup of broth or two during the day to ease your "Atkins flu"? This works wonders for me...also, are you drinking lots of water? I would stilll skip the chocolate and swap the broth or bullion (sp?). Sip a cup of that before a meal and see if that helps your stomach and energy.

That's a fabulous idea! I am drinking tons of water, but wow, I just made a cup of bouillion and it was great! Today it took me 2 hours to eat breakfast, if the cats hadn't been such fierce competition I might not have made it...though the last few bites went down easier. I went to the store and got more bouillion and a couple of other faves that might help get me through this rough patch...I have a big evening ahead, working a charity table at Star Fest, so I gotta get some food in there!

I hope it really helps you! It helps me a lot. Sometimes I have a cup after I have gone out and exercised for a long time and feel weak or tired - too much sweating and fluid loss I guess. It's warm and soothing though. Fixes me right up!

Have you taken your blood pressure? BP changes can wipe you out and make you dizzy. Might be worth checking.

That's a good point, my blood pressure tends to be on the low side anyway. It has been normal (for me) all along but I don't remember if I took it at that particular time (probably not, cuz I was not thinking very clearly). If it happens again I will certainly do that! Thanks!

Re: Having appetite and energy problems on induction

I'm on day 6 and having a very low energy day too...and logged on to see if this was typical! I'm not having any problem eating, but the Atkin foods are the foods I have always craved. I go a little heavy on cheese sometimes. Which is probably the reason I have only lost 2 pounds.

The BP does sound like a good suggestion, and mine typically runs low also.

Glad you are feeling better, and congrats on the weight loss!
