  • What carbs do you miss?

    I'm about a month in and I'm surprised to find that I DON'T miss my favorite carbs like bread, crackers and pizza crust!!!
    A friend of mine is in OWL and is always complaining about missing her favorite carbs. How are you doing without all the old carbs you used to eat?

    Well I'm on day 4 and none of them bother me, it's just time consuming to try to figure how to do things with what you can have. So I must say for convience only, I miss bread, it can hold almost anything! LOL

      Low carb eating is very much a mental thing especially in the beginning. While it is common to miss some foods at first, focusing on things not on your current phase is counterproductive. Some people like to complain all the time though.

      I do miss my homemade breads and pastas sometimes. Fortunately there are so many good things I can make that I get over it. It is much easier to do this with Atkins. When I was doing the low fat/low calorie/low taste diets, it was very difficult to be happy with a lot of my foods. I also know that I can have them later on down the road. Will I want them then? Maybe not. As for foods that no one should really eat, it's all about commitment to a healthier lifestyle.

      Sounds like you are doing a great job with your new food choices and WOE. Your friend, not so much.

        I always say to my husband - 'you know, I really love tuna mayonaise but on a low fat diet I can't have the mayonnaise coz of the fat content and when I'm on atkins I can't have the mayonnaise coz of the sugar content'

        Same as cheese sandwiches - if you're on low fat you can't have the cheese, if you're on atkins you can't have the bread. No cheese sandwiches

        If you're overweight though, you have to go without something to be slim. I'd much rather it be carbs since I'm never satisfied and always hungry with carbs. Bread and stuff just doesn't appeal to me any more since it makes me feel bad.

        Chocolate on the other hand.... ahh but there are atkins bars for the occasional craving.

          Oh I'm a carb junkie. I could eat ice creams from all of those places, pizza, tortilla chips, pizza, and specialty breads and you know, saltines with cold butter used to be one of my favorites once and awhile but... I feel BETTER when I eat those things made with recipes from low carb.

          Today I'm getting ready for the week and making a casserole with ground turkey, cutting up veggies, have romaine leafs for "sandwiches" and I may just make the pizza out of the cauliflower recipe. Mashed potatoes are great too but you can make them out of cauliflower and they are delicious!

          It can be hard because we want that reward right away. I have to keep telling myself how much better I feel without them....

          You don't really have to do without, find the recipe and make it - they are delicious low carb!

              You can have mayonnaise on Atkins.

              There are acceptable substitutions for bread that are Atkins friendly. Linda's Low Carb Menus & Recipes

                I really don't miss any anymore. The longer I do this, cheat-free, the less I think about or crave any of those things. I found when I'm craving, it's usually because I was "feeding the beast" by doing something wrong or eating something that is a food trigger and causes cravings. And the more I like the things I do eat. When I have "tasted" some of these old things, they no longer taste the same or any bit satisfying.

                I have made a few replacement type foods before, such as riced cauliflower and Atkins pizza using cauliflower as a crust. Those are pretty good, but I tend to overeat them because they are a food trigger for me so I do them carefully.

                It takes some creativity and a mental shift to simply accept that this is how you're going to eat now and then do it. If you keep thinking about the things you can't have, you'll never accept this.

                  I do miss bread (real, fluffy fresh white(hmm, or brown, or rye...) bread.
                  I also miss ice cream...

                  I do occasionally make substitues for both of these...but the difference between the substitutes & the necessity of practicing portion control make it "not the same'.

                  Of course being 100lbs thinner is "not the same" too Totally worth it!!!

                        I don't miss anything at all. I enjoy the foods I have on Atkins. I love vegi's and meats and eggs and flax muffins.....

                          I surprisingly don't miss my carbs that much, however, when I go by Starbucks, I miss the Java Chip Frappuccino...Also sushi with rice, although I love sashimi...
                          Every once in a while I fantasize (LOL) about eating an entire loaf of belgian bread, hot from the bakery, slathered in butter, with the creamiest brie I can find and a good merlot...Then I wake up and think SUMMER IS COMING and I promised myself to be able to wear shorts without freaking out this year!!! Wakes me up real good
