  • Side effects??

I did the Atkins a while ago now and I'm back doing induction again after being a BIT naughty (lol).

I'm on day 5 of Induction phase and I haven't cheated (yay go me!) but I've noticed something different this time round. I have all the usual suspects; terrifying breath, achey legs and arms, tiredness etc but I've also noticed a constant pain in my lower back (I'd say in line with my tail bone) and white blotchy patches on my arms and legs... like pea sized speckles. They're not raised just weird blotches.

    Anyone had this before?

I am 12 days in and did not get the atkins flu. However I had one of your symptoms.. About Wed of last week which would have been day 7 I had terrible pain in my lower back and hips when I went to bed.. I couldnt get comfortable at all.. I was miserable. I had not been doing any exersize that was different than normal.. I really dont know what it was all about but it only lasted for about 3 nights. Now it is gone...
Oh.. but my urine still smells horrific ... LOL but that is a good thing

Sometimes when you take away a lot of different kinds of foods, and you eat more of the healthier foods, food allergies can rear their ugly head! Look up food allergies in the DANDR to see what Atkins has to say about that. Or you can wait for a more educated and informative person to swing by here.

Bad news for me... the white blotches, itching and constant back pain are related to to the diet. Despite drinking plenty of water and eating all the veg and salad permitted, my kidneys are struggling resulting in the back pain. As for the skin it's caused by toxins. =(

I've been advised to eat plenty of fruit and veg, avoid starchy carbs and cut back on the amount of meat I'm eating, lol.

Looks like it's old fashioned excercise and portion control for me. GUTTED!! Lol.

Yep. Too much protien can overload the kidneys and in my case the toxins are now causing the white itchy blotches on my skin... which I've been advised is dangerous if I continue.

I don't really eat that much protein I guess...I focus more on the healthy fats and veggies, mediocre protein, and lower carb.

Best of luck to you. Some people just have diets that their body prefers...My mom is more like you.

Lol.. I'm following it to the letter. I did Atkins DANDR last year and had no problems on it. I guess my body isn't too happy about the whole affair this time round.

Did you have kidney problems before you started Atkins this time around?
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

That's a good point actually, Elizellen. Maybe I should move straight onto maintenance now and up my excercise. I'm not here to shed weight rapidly this time round. I just want to eat a healthy lifestyle. Thanks! =)

Also, no... I've not been having any kidney problems (well not that I know of admittedly).

You should climb the carb ladder.

your kidney problems could be caused my too much protein, because your kidney needs to work harder to filter out all that extra protein. when you have a high protein diet, you need to drink A LOT of water, so that you can flush your system out. Otherwise, it can result in kidney stones.

Is moodiness a symptom? I haven't had any of the listed symptoms such a cramps, headaches, etc...I've just been really moody and I know it is not PMS related.
