  • Salt supplementation

    Hi,

I've been experiencing symptoms of not getting/having enough salt, so I ate 1/2 t of salt to try and alleviate the problem.

I have to say, that was one of the most unpleasant experiences of my life. I nearly vomited. I'm really hoping I just ate too much or something (I measured using a common tea/"cereal" spoon; not a measuring spoon).

Have any of you experienced this? How do you deal with needing more salt?

Why not use that 1/2 tsp of salt to lightly salt all of your meals? Eating a spoonful of salt like that may cause your blood pressure to spike.

I already salt my meals and the book says that's not enough.

      Ugh... don't ever do this.

What book are you reading? I don't remember DANDR saying anything about having a lot of salt (or any symptoms of sodium deprivation).

I read DANDR but also the New book to get updated information, and that's where the info about salt came from -- also confirmed online.

The new book wasn't written by Dr. Atkins though. You will quickly find out that this board follows the DANDR 2002 version since it was the last version to come out before Dr. Atkins died. What symptoms are you having by the way? You may be getting conflicting information from both books and what you're experience may be due to something else you're doing (or not doing) rather than the salt.

            Just my two cents

I know :P I get this every time I bring the new book up, even though the information is 99% the same.

By online do you mean atkins.com and the great salt debate threads? ADBB does go by DANDR and so our advice is based upon that book.

I have read the new book and the purposeful addition of salt to one's diet is one point that I strongly disagree with. The Atkins diet is a ketogenic diet which means that it has diuretic effects. To purposely add salt just for the sake of adding salt to promote water retention and negate the diuretic effects seems counter-productive and not what Dr. Atkins intended.

Yes, Induction flu can be unpleasant (especially if one's pre-Atkins diet was heavy on processed/prepared foods and/or sugar/carbs) but it is over in a few days if doing a clean Induction. Flushing out toxins seems like a good idea to me...not trying to stop it with a lot of sodium. JMHO...YMMV

Are those the symptoms the new book indicates are due to a lack of sodium? Because according to this website: http://www.medicinenet.com/hyponatremia/article.htm, if you are having those symptoms and it's due to a lack of salt, you should seek medical care immediately.
