  • Induction and an extended Business Trip

    Hello All,

I'm a long time listener, first time caller.

I did induction last year and reached my goal weight relatively easily, but....in the last year I've had to move across the country, change jobs, etc. I've really slipped, but have managed to keep it down to only gaining back 8 lbs.

My dilemma is this: I have just started induction again to cleanse my body of the carb cravings and now I am being sent on a two week business trip. I will not have a fridge in my room and will be forced to eat a majority of my meals out/on the road.

I welcome any and all advice on how to proceed during this difficult time because I don't want to fall off the wagon again.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Welcome back to the atkins way of life.

Have you asked the motel/hotel if they can move a small refrig into your room. I have found that If you ask them, they will oblige, if they have them on hand.

I take my small ice chest with me when I am away on a trip. I resently went with my DD to OKC and stayed a week. I went down for their continental breakfast. I would eat hardboiled eggs. Then at noon I ate out of my ice chest. I had veggies cleaned and cutup and ready to eat. I had red and green bell peppers, celery, jicama, cherry tomatoes and canned tuna or canned chicken. I was getting a bit tired of this combination for 5 days, but I ate it anyway. I didn't want to go off plan.
Then in the evening for supper we went out and ate at steak houses. I ate steak, green beans and tossed green salad. I even brought my own dressing. I eat olive oil and lemon juice on my salads.
It can be done, but you have to plan ahead. I am sure others will make suggestions too. I wish you the very best.

First congrats on sticking to goal pretty well despite all the changes in the last year. I eat out almost everyday while at work, and usually find the best meal at a local salad bar within a grocery store. That said I like the grilled chicken salad for dinner every single day of the week. What do you like? On other business trips I have known to eat to cold bunless cheeseburgers, luncheon meat cheese rollups, or anything just to get through the day before able to eat somewhere nice for supper. Breakfast for myself on the road is usually a stop at BK or McD's where I order just the sausage patty (or multiples).

The point it can certainly be done -- you just have to figure out what your individual tastes are.

An ice chest is a great idea.

Also if you eat out, stick to the basics: grilled or broiled meats, steammed vegetables, salads, etc.

And don't forget to print out the wallet-sized Induction Foods List at the top of the forum.

Along with all of those great suggestions, I would avoid restaurants such as Chinese that use a lot of sugars/starches in their dishes. One thing about this woe, you get to be really good at being assertive in restaurants and asking specifics about the foods they prepare and making requests!
