Hi Ellizellen, Thanks for that. i actually managed to get some milled golden flaxseed from Sainsburys and it was not too expensive. So i will try it out tomorrow morning, fingers crossed. i also ordered some whey protein off ebay as i managed to find a coconut shake recipe in the New Atkins , New You book that you can do on induction so will try that as well. By the time i have tried all these new recipes my induction will be over ha ha!!

For induction only whey protein isolate is 'legal'. Plain whey protein can be reintroduced when you reach the dairy rung/level of OWL.

Be wary of any supposed induction recipes in the new Atkins company book as they seem to have changed the rules in many instances to the rules we are following here in the 2002/2003 edition of Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution.

What are the ingredients of the coconut shake - coconut is not 'legal' till you reach the 3rd level/rung of OWL
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

IMO, the coconut shake from the Atkins 2010 book is NOT Induction friendly:

Unsweetened almond or soy milk, coconut milk, unsweetened whey protein powder, unsweetened cocoa powder, vanilla, ice (ice is acceptable on Induction ), Splenda

Sorry, Anjie but this is definitely an OWL recipe according to DANDR. Glad you found the flaxmeal/linseed though.

        Hi Mizski
Tried the flaxseed this morning and it was yummy, not too much to eat though but still nice and filling. It does not say how many grams of carbs this recipe is though, can you help with that??

Try adding all the ingredients to a new day on www.fitday.com and it will calculate the nutrition numbers for you.

If you want to eat it again you can then use those totals to make a custom food called 'flax cereal' or something like that so you don't have to add the ingredients seperately next time.

            Hi Elizellen
Thanks for your messages, i will check fitday out. Must admit i am bit annoyed regarding the new atkins new you diet book then, how are we in the UK meant to know that it is not acceptable on induction if it tells us that it is in the book??? I am at end of induction anyway, not lost as much as i thought that i would 6lbs in 2 weeks?? but i guess it is a loss and not a gain. I am coming to america in a few weeks on holidays so i will have to stock up on low carb bars and foods while there as they are expensive over here ha ha, anyway thanks again Anjie

Here on ADBB we go by Dr. Atkins last book, Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, 2002 ed. (often called DANDR) not the Atkins 2010 book by ANI. Their new book has changed a lot of things, especially in Induction, allowing for more OWL foods to be had at first in an effort to appeal to the masses.

It's not a UK thing, it's that you are using a different book and a different diet than we do on ADBB.

Low carb bars/shakes etc are considered to be "bad". Not a good idea to "stock up" on these at all. Save yourself the money from buying them and buy whole foods instead.

Hi All, well i joined fitday and my flaxseed cereal thingy works out at only 1.5 g of carbs, so i guess i can have more!!! What about the atkins low carb bars??? I must admit i am desperately craving chocolate and wine and i fell off the wagon last night and had a small glass of white wine, and 2 pieces of chocolate!! OMG did i enjoy them but i did feel guilty. I have irritable bowel syndrome and i have found my symptoms have been much better since i stopped eating bread, potatoes, rice, pasta etc and i want to remain on it but i am starting to struggle so any tips would be very gratefully received as i dont really want to put on too much weight when i am in USA, so tips for what i can eat out would be great, Thanks

                      Re: Anjie24's new thread

Steer clear of the Atkins chocolate bars - they are really just a way of tricking you back into eating chocolate and not nutritionally balanced for using as replacements for real food.

If you do decide you 'need' them as additions to your OWL eating make sure you check the list of ingredients to make sure which rung/level of OWL they are allowed for. As far as I know they either contain soy (rung 6) or grains (rung 9) so are not an 'early' addition in my opinion. Apart from their funky magical non-counting carbs!!

As for the wine, well you know that was't a really good decision, but it is done now so pick yourself back up and continue on your induction menus till the cravings subside.

Feeding your sugar monster with 'sweet' will only just keep it alive and giving you more cravings. The best thing to do is to eat something high-fat as a snack or even something sour like a pickled gherkin to teach that old monster that you are willing to feed it but with food of YOUR choice, not his choice

Eventually he will shrivel up and die if neglected long enough.

Eating out is really not that hard if you tell them to leave off any non-induction foods (take a list of the allowed foods list in your bag) and give you extra 'legal' vegies and butter instead.
Ask what is in sauces - waiting staff should be used to this and have the info available even if it means asking the chef - and if in doubt ask for the meat plainly cooked and have something like oil/vinegar instead. Or take some small packets of a fullfat dressing that you know is OK with you to pull out and add. Or ask for extra butter to melt over the meat to up your fat content.

Desserts are probably not going to be 'acceptable' but many places offer a cheese board - a few pieces of cheese with a couple of sticks of celery make a tasty dessert to nibble on while others are stuffing themselves with flour and sugar!

I even make my own flax/linseed crackers so I can take them to formal do's and eat them with paté or cheese if on the menu or just spread with butter to nibble on while everyone else is enjoying their floury highly processed bread rolls.

how big is a "cup"?? can anyone tell me?? i did not keep a journal, but i think i may have not been eating enough veg, would that slow down your weight loss?? also not had very many snacks?? Maybe i should try induction again for th enext 2 weeks and write everything down, measure everything and see how that goes. What does everyone else think?? Elizellen, thanks for your tips but no desserts on my hols sounds terrible to me so i may have to indulge slightly now and then and go back on atkins when i come home. I dont have too much to lose only a stone so it would not harm very much would it?? Also if i eat whole foods can i get a chocolate substitute like carob. I did try the choc pots in the New diet New You book and they were very nice. Its very confusing as i have the old book, diet revolution and i have the new one so i am getting conflicting advise, tho the new book fits in better with my life, but less weight loss, whereas revolution is stricter and more mundane but maybe more weight loss?? Confused, me too!!

                          Re: Anjie24's new thread

Well as long as you check the ingredients on any recipes in NANY to make sure they agree with the allowed foods list in DANDR I imagine you won't be far wrong.

A 'cup' is a volume measure of 8 USA fluid ounces which = 237 mls if you have stuff you can put in a measuring jug but it is often easier to find out the weight of a cupsworth of most veggies I think, particularly for tose of us this side of the pond who are used to scales for cooking.

There is a good sticky thread in the Atkins Diet FAQ forum with this info for most of the induction list of veggies that Soliwit compiled a few years ago

And here is Jimmie 48's comprehensive carb counter file which also lists the phase of Atkins/rung of OWL the foods are 'legal' for which will come in handy when you climb the OWL ladder

or you can search for individual foods on the USDA database which is most websites source for this info

or even download the database for using when not online

I think it would be a good exercise to log all your foods for the next couple of weeks if only to get into the habit of seeing how it stacks up to what you are aiming at on induction. Think of it as being a 'dummy run' or practice for when you get back home after the break.

As to eating on holiday, maybe stick to a maintenance choice of foods for nost meals - so choose mainly foods on the OWL rungs avoiding as much stuff made with overprocessed white flour and sugar as you can will allow you to at least not gain too much

And then allow yourself the occasional indulgence in something you really cannot bear to miss out on so you don't feel deprived

If you can do a lot of sightseeing and keep moving your body to burn off some of that extra sugar you never know what might happen with regards to your weight!!

Thanks Elizellen, all those points are really helpful and i will do my utmost to follow them before and during my hols, we will be doing a lot of walking round the theme parks for the first few days then heading to the Keys so walking and swimming, lots of salad and seafood, and i cant wait to get my hands on some crab legs, and hot chicken wings, mostly stay away from fries, other potato products, bread and pasta. My main downfalls are the occasional choc bar and the odd 2-3 glasses of wine, but on holiday the wine usually increases. Maybe better to have a small short with diet sugar free coke or lemonade or soda, or white wine spritzer?? Cant NOT have any on my hols. Anjie
