  • Carbs / Net Carbs / Sugar

I have read the Induction FAQ but maybe I am missing something. I understand carbs - fiber = net carbs. But what if something has some sugar in it? Is all sugar off limits or is it carbs + sugar - fiber = adjusted net carbs? Or is any amount of sugar taboo?

    For example, food item A has: 7 carbs / 3 fiber / 1 sugar. Net carbs = 4 or ?

Another question, if I eat something but also take a fiber supplement with it, wouldn't that counteract some of the carbs?

    Thanks!

Re: Carbs / Net Carbs / Sugar

It does get complicated when you look at food labels as sometimes you will see sugar listed in two different places.

First look at the list of ingredients to see if sugar or one of sugar's many other names - corn syrup, HFCS, dextrose, fructose, etc - are listed as having been added to the product. If you see sugar on this list then it is not an Atkins-legal food so don't buy it. Some people make an exception if the sugar is right at the end of a long list of ingredients assuming there is only a little of it, but you will have to decide if that works for you

Then look at the nutrition panel where it lists carbohydrates, including sugars and fiber. Sugar listed here is the natural sugar from the food, so something like a tomato would have sugar listed here So you only deduct the fiber number from the total carbs.
    In your example
    food item A has: 7 carbs / 3 fiber / 1 sugar. Net carbs = 4 or ?
just take off the fiber leaving 4 net carbs.

As for adding a fiber supplement, all you would be doing would be adding the fiber from the supplement then taking it off again, leaving no change in the carb counts.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Re: Carbs / Net Carbs / Sugar

If it has added sugar you should not generally eat it. Some products have natural sugars like veggies and cheese but they are allowed. But if the list of ingredients says sugar it is out (So you need to check both the list of ingredients and the label)
When there is a seperate entry for sugar on the label it is included in the carb count. So the example you give it does have 4 carbs. (But only if you live in north america - in Europe they have different rules)

And now unfortunatly fiber supplements do not counteract carbs
Think of the possibilities if it did
