  • How long should I stay in Induction phase?

Hi guys. Im new to Atkins Diet. Im learning as I go. Im a big girl (300 lbs +). I have been big my whole life. Im sick and tired of it!!! Due to a horrible accident last year, I have become unable to walk or stand more than 10 mins at a time. So I have gained a LOT of weight. I really have to make this work. So, Im trying to figure out how long I should stay in induction. The limited food and veggies dont bother me too much. I never ate any veggies before besides a salad.... im trying new ones, and still finding I dont like them. LOL

Any words of wisdom here would be appreciated. Thank you so much *Liz*

You can't stay on Induction "as long as you want". The longest safe time is 6 months.

I thought I was gonna stay on Induction for months. Lost about 15 pounds in the first two weeks and then nothing. As soon as I started to move up the rungs I began losing again. This seems to be a pattern for me.

I feel good and don't feel like I'm missing out on anything. This should be a lifestyle change or you'll just gain your weight back (I'm speaking from experience).

Take it slow and follow DANDR (2002) and you'll be fine.

      Best of luck to ya!

How many veggies are you eating? Are you getting enough? As moving into OWL, you need to add more veggies. Keep trying new ones and in different ways. Have you checked out Linda's low carb site? Lots of recipes there. I've found I like alot more veggies than I thought, alot has to do with the preparation. Or in sometimes, disguising them veggies. Over time, the longer I do this WOE, the more I've come to like veggies. It's a mental shift and your tastes will change too.

If you're able to get enough veggies in, I'd move onto OWL, as weight loss if often better there plus you get more variety of foods. Just always remember that veggies come first!

Are you able to exercise at all? Even doing some light weights while sitting down or floor exercises. My first year on Atkins, I didn't exercise much due to similar issues, chronic pain and fatigue due to health reasons, but I noticed I felt better and the weight came off faster when I started exercising again. The key is to start out small and slowly ramp up as you are able to do more.
        Start date: 2/22/04 347/222/135 ~ 5'2"
        STAC Restart: 1/05/09
        306/229/135 ~ 5'2" 77 lbs down!

        Goal #1: 247 - 2nd 10% (59lbs, 247, also 100 lbs total loss) - Met 1/4/10!!!
        Goal #2: 241 - Halfway to goal! (106 lbs lost) - Met 2/21/10!!!

        Goal #3: 222 - 3rd 10% - Lowest Atkins weight
        Goal #4: 210 - Still on track!
        Goal #5: 200/199 - 4th 10% - One-derland! End year goal!
Female/Hypothyroidism/Arthritis/Fibromyalgia - If I can lose weight on this, so can you!

As many people have told me, you should be losing most of your weight on OWL. Once I hit the 30% mark (30 pounds, 5 pounds away for me) I am going to move to OWL. I tried staying on induction for too long before, and I think the lack of variety is part of what drove me to cheat.

Re: How long should I stay in Induction phase?

i stayed on induction for a month. after i did the 2 weeks i was feeling really good. so i went back and re-read the book and saw where dr atkins said if you had a lot of weight to lose you could safely do induction for about 6 months. so i played through on induction for another 2 weeks giving me 4 weeks total of strict induction. the way time is flying these days that month went by real quick.

it sounds like you have a decent amount of weight to lose so i would do the 2 week induction phase and then see how you feel and evaluate your personal situation after the 2 weeks. if you feel like you are happy and satisified on induction then i would say push forward and go another 2 weeks and then evaluate everything again at that point.

You could try some chopped onion and peppers added to chili (without beans, of course). You can also add tomato sauce to it... just check that there's no sugar added (it will appear on the list of ingredients).

Do you like pesto? You could have pesto on flax crackers.
