  • Smiling like an Idiot! 12 pounds in one week!

Ok, it has had its frustrating moments - in part because carb counts vary from one Atkins source to another and from one Atkins source to a non-Atkins source - and so far, the weight loss isn't visible (not surprising) BUT this 6 foot 58 year old Canadian guy in his first week dropped from 240 to 228!! That's good, isn't it???

But not just bragging here - I have thoughts and questions.

Oh yeah, first, are those results accurate? Yup! Did the whole doctor's office underwear-only weigh-in thing before and after (he thinks I'm an idiot for using Atkins) AND used the scale at home AND moved the scale from room to room AND used another scale to confirm the first and they all kept saying "You've lost 12 pounds!"

Now, here's the non-bragging question part.

I researched and found that a 240 pound male needed about 3400 calories a day to maintain that weight, so still using Atkins principles, I added a personal restriction - no more than 2000 calories a day. I reasoned that a 1400 caloie a day shortfall combined with treadmill (5 times), walking (7 times) and serious biking (distance, not pace) would create a caloric deficit that, when added to the Atkins chemistry, would create the necessary remarkable results that I need to keep motivation high.

It seems to be working but I'd love to know if others have had success with the same principle. Does caloric deficit play a big part in Atkins????

I'll be honest - the lack of VISIBLE results became depressing and I nearly gave up but then I haven't started the crunches / weight training thingie - THAT starts tomorrow.

And one last thing - I'd love to know what others are eating daily and I'll happily share my menus with anyone. I mean, we're all in this together, no? (I'm planning a week at a time to ensure variety)

And if I have once again posted this to the wrong place, my apologies, but maybe we newbies need to introduce more than who we are and share how we are doing.

By the way, my plan is Induction Atkins for three more weeks and then I may (note the word "may") switch to a slightly different plan.

And once again, thanks to those who have answered my previous questions.

    A Happy Torontonian!!

Hmmmm. I start far too many paragraphs with "And". Oh well.

When you say switch to another plan, do you mean OWL or another diet?

Your 1400 calorie "diet" isn't likely to do much except put you in famine mode. And that's really going to put a damper on those "remarkable results" you're hoping for!

If 2000 calories is below your BMR, then you will put your body in starvation mode. You will keep losing weight, but the weight loss will be slow, unhealthy, and since you will be losing muscle mass along with fat, you will probably not like the end result that much.

Wow! I think that is fantastic. I am also new so can't offer a whole lot of insight on the whole diet-calorie thing, but just want to say that you are off to a great start and keep doing what ever it is you are doing because it is clearly working wonders. I am on week 2 and down 10 lbs but am a bit smaller. Congrats again!

Re: Smiling like an Idiot! 12 pounds in one week!

Thanks Hockey sk8 - and the same to you! I can't believe how motivating a few fewer pounds can be.

I've been averaging 1900 calories a day and frankly can't eat anything more. Why in the world would I force myself to do so? I'm using the 2002 version of Atkins and I read it quite thoroughly. Whenever I look at sample diets published by Atkins, they all seem to add up to the calorie range I'm in right now.

Atkins Gal, the diet I am looking at is the Abs Diet. It has some similar principles and a little more variety. At the end of an Atkins induction month, I'll decide which suits my lifestyle.

One mental change I made seems to be helping, so I'll offer it up for thought. After all, dieting involves playing mental games with yourself to some degree, no??

For the longest while, my motivation was strictly health benefits. Those are wonderful but they are also long term. Like many people, I sometimes respond well to quick gratification.

So, I did two things. One, I decided that instead of a healthier me, it's all going to be about a sexier me. I've decided that in a year and a half, I will be the world's sexiest 60 year old! And, since Atkins is saving me a ton of money - no cigs, no booze, less wasted food and no impulse food purchases, I decided to spand the money I would have smoked, sipped or swallowed on "neat" stuff. So far, the rewards have been a first edition mystery by a favorite writer and a weirdly expensive haircut!

Those and the melting weight are all the motivation I need right now - oh, and the very cute young thing on the treadmill beside me this morning who mentioned that I seemed to be losing weight. LOL.

            Life is good - hehehe!!!

You seem to have a very clear and optimistic vision of your time on Atkins! This is great! I was much more confused when I have started... And yeah cool target!

Just wanted to say... don't refuse yourself in food ... I think it is the greatest part of atkins.. that you can actually eat as much of juicy meat (even if it is fat) as you wish! At least that what held me on it for 9 month - that I did not need to be hungry

Another thing - I don't know how the rest of you guys... But I do still buy stuff in a shop I did not intended to But now instead of sweets - its sausages and cheese

So I wouldn't account for a great cut in expenses

But your inspiration is a great!

Wish you a very good luck!

Have you looked at the variety of Atkins? Or do you think Atkins is just Induction?

Re: Smiling like an Idiot! 12 pounds in one week!

Calorie deficit doesn't play a huge role in Atkins, since studies show that you could put two people side by side who ate the same amount of calories, and the low carber lost 15% more weight. It has a lot to do with how your body uses food for fuel and burns the fat in the absence of carbohydrates.

The Abs diet is still pretty low carb. I liken it to Dr. Thompson's Low Glycemic Plan. It basically does away with the phases and gives an allowance for the day to generally adhere to. Just be sure to seriously consider testing for gluten and casein allergies, maybe allergies to soy and to nightshades for kicks, to see which, if any, of those groups might cause problems during the abs diet or a glycemic load plan. The benefit to Atkins is because it adds those foods back slowly, you get a general idea pretty much right away that something's wrong if you have them. Test one group at a time, and be sure to keep notes so you can refer back.

Regardless, your loss is amazing, but not unfathomable! Atkins induction is like magic to a society so used to eating a diet based in grasses.

Thanks, Cleochatra. You've given me a lot of neat stuff to think about. And hey, Annyshka, I just bought a 14 oz steak!!!!!!! hehehe

Atkinsgal, I know there's more to it than induction.

Atkins isn't for everyone. Some people need more variety from the beginning, and that's ok, too! I love Atkins, but the world is too big for only one weight loss plan, thankfully--or we wouldn't even have Atkins!

Again, congratulations, cogito! I think no matter what you decide, it will be the right decision for you--but check into Thompson's plan as well. I think you'd like his reasoning and the application of glycemic load to a low carbohydrate mindset--which is what his book is.
