  • Help!!

    Hello All!

Today is my 13th day of Induction, and I feel like I totally screwed it up! I have been eating my veggies, but through induction I have been feeling very tired and weak... I read somewhere along the lines that people with blood Type A have a hard time digesting meats too ..

Well I am a type A, and after talking with my friend who has a masters in Nutrition (NOT saying that matters) but she kind of spooked me about Atkins and I freaked and had oatmeal!!

I am very upset because having the carbs definitely induced a TON of cravings ... cravings of sweets and carbs! I'm very upset and I'm still having a tough time admitting that I messed up because I'm such a perfectionist...

Any advice on what to do??? I know I don't need to beat myself up, and I know that within the Induction period, I have felt great (other than being a bit tired) and have had NO bloating with my skin looking flawless. I suppose I am just spooked at what she said??!

Should I stay on induction for a bit longer?

I am SO confused, HELP PLEASE!!!

    xo

Could you post a complete menu, with quantities and net carbs? How many calories have you been eating? How much water?

If I were to worry about everything I read online...

Any advice on what to do???
Finish Induction, do a few extra days if you still have cravings, then move to OWL.

I suppose I am just spooked at what she said??!
So what did she say that was more convincing that everything you read in DANDR?

She basically said that our Brain has to have carbs to function .. I told her that I was eating at least 12-15 net carbs of veggies and she said I still needed grain carbs to help the functioning of my brain ... She really just spooked me.. I'm half way through the book I scammed some sections, but read most to half ... I suppose I need ot surely finish it in the next few days.

Also, yes I have been drinking a lot of water!

And, are you sure I should do a few more days of Induction or maybe like seven days??

        Re: Help!!

What your friend probably meant was our brains have to have glucose to function, as do all of our internal organs. Everything you eat - EVERYTHING - converts to glucose at some point, because our bodies run on glucose.

From your signature, it appears you've lost 10 pounds in 13 days. Something to consider - has any diet your nutritionist friend recommended ever had that kind of results? I know your friend means well, truly, but from what I've seen over the last 30+ years, our learned nutritionists have turned our country into a very fat one. Just smile, say yes, and keep on with something you know is working for you.

          Your friend is misinformed.

The brain does not need grains to function. It is true that some parts of the brain require glucose. Glucose is necessary for all cells lacking mitochondria. Another example is red blood cells. However, what these cells don't need is dietary carbohydrate.

When one is restricting carbohydrate intake, the body fuels those cells that require glucose by creating glucose from protein (mostly) and fat.

So no worries... one's brain functions just fine on Atkins.

It's enough if you only do Induction until you get your cravings back in check. After all, the first thing you add in OWL is only 5 net carbs of vegetables.

                Re: Help!!

I agree with Georgiana, stay on induction for a few days till you have any cravings under control then move to OWL.

Adding more vegetables might be just what your body needs to get more nutrients into you and stop that tiredness too. Dr Atkins mentions that some people might experience what he called 'ascent weakness' on induction's limited carb count and his solution was to add more vegetables

I also second Georgiana's suggestion that you list your menus so people can maybe spot ways of helping you improve your food choices if needed. We have a special forum for this - the 'review my menu' forum.

Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

What a great start to your Atkins journey

That is a loss of nearly 25% of your total hoped-for loss already - terrific work

                    Re: Help!!

May I suggest that you read some of the low carb literature out there and arm yourself with some knowledge about what you are doing. This will make you have more self confidence to stick to your guns. And you are going to need to stick to your guns

Hope you are having a good day

                      Re: Help!!

Okay... Eight days since the scare from my friend ... I finished reading up most of Atkins (minus the recipes in the back). I am back in the journey and NOT giving up. I know atkins works for me and I will continue it as a life journey! I'm going to do 3 days of a clean induction and begin my rungs. I had a few slips this past week, but I'm not going to sweat those and let them make or break me ... I'll keep an update of my weigh-ins and journey. Thank you all for helping me steer clear of quitting.
