  • Extended Induction Question

    Morning all!

I have an induction question. I started induction on March 10th. I have been steadily losing, and up to about 25 pounds. Its so funny, because every Friday I get on the scale and there is two pounds down....and I can tell inches are being lost.

I am perfectly comfortable in induction..I was recently diagnosed type II diabetic, and my numbers have dropped to a great level! I am looking to lose another 25lbs.

I have stayed in induction, since I havent stalled yet. I would like to know your thoughts on if I she still be in Induction..or should I be moving to the next step?

    Re: Extended Induction Question

You need time to go through OWL and pre-maintenance to figure things out and make sure that you can keep the weight off for life. Mentally it sounds like you are fine on induction but sicne you are already half way to goal I'd say it's time to move on to OWL.

      OWL.

You shouldn't stay on Induction forever.

          Re: Extended Induction Question

I think a lot of our members have felt this way initially - a bit along the lines of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' thinking

But unless you plan to eat from the induction food list and at 20 net grams of carbohydrates for ever you do need to think about adding some of the foods from the OWL rungs eventually.

Dr Atkins expected us to be at the premaintenance phase by the time we have only 5 to 10 pounds left to lose, having discovered our CCLL and if any foods affect us by adding the OWL foods before then, so realistically you do need to move to OWL soon.

Doing OWL in the order set out in DANDR can take several months as you test different carb levels and different foods, and is easier to carry out when you still have a fair number of pounds to go, so you can still use your regular weightloss as a judge of whether your losing is affected by the new foods or the new carb level.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

            Re: Extended Induction Question

read chapter 13 and 14 in your DANDR 2002 so you know what OWL is all about. I stayed in extended induction until i answered yes to the want other foods question. I still had over 45 pounds to go. My weight loss didn't slow down that much from the move.

Think about your Atkins eating as building a new house for yourself. Induction is the foundation and you have done a great job building it using your induction legal veggies, water fats and proteins. But you don't want to live your entire life in the basement without a roof do you?
Owl is the framing of the walls of your house. You will be testing many different building materials from those rungs on a carb ladder to see which ones will work in your house to make it strong to last a life time.

Then you will when you get within 5-10 pounds of your target weight be moving to premaintnenace to put up those roofing trusses and shingles. Once you move in a t maintenance you can do the finishing work and you can always do a little remodeling through the yrs as your likes and dislikes in foods changes.

You can go as slow as you want climbing the carb ladder.
See what adding just 5 more net grams of carbs of the induction veggies you are already eating does to your numbers. I know it will help you greatly with getting all the needed vits and minerals. Read chapter 12 so you know all the possible sugar reactions you could incure as you balance doing OWL with your diabetes. You may be lucky and have a high CCLL or you might find you have to be very restrictive with your carbs, but you will never know until you try OWL.

              Re: Extended Induction Question

I felt that induction was a safe place to be and hesitated moving because OWL is a bit more challenging but I am glad I did move.
You are thinking about it so maybe it is time for you to explore adding in a more variable of carb foods. As long as you are under your CCLL you will still lose.
