  • What if you're not hungry?

    Hey All,
Jade here...and not hungry! It was so hard for me to get my food in today! I simply don't have an appetite anymore. But I've been trying to make myself eat. But is that really the right thing to do? I hate teaching my body to eat when it's not hungry but wasn't there something in the book about trying to eat a little something anyway?
If any of you vets have had this problem I would love some advice!
Not to end this note on a sour note: I did weigh in this morning

10lbs lost for the week!! (THROW CONFETTI!!! WHOOO HOOO!)

So, pressing on but am wondering about that hunger thang!

    Be well-

      Hi Jade, :wave

One of the most wonderful responses to being in ketosis is finally control over your appetite. For many people suffering from obsessive food disorders and addictions this natural response to Ketosis is a miracle.

But you still have to eat - don't force yourself into eating three big meals a day, break them down instead into six small meals. This way your not overwhelmed and it's easy to ensure you don't go more than six waking hours without eating.

You'll level out and your appetite will come back, but you won't ever be ravenous. Give your body time to adjust, eat a little something every six hours or so and you'll do just fine. Congrats on the weight loss!

        Hey "Laurenfra"
Thanks for taking the time to respond. I appreciate it. That's what I have been doing. So maybe I'll just continue.
I didn't know there was an adictions forum. I'll have to visit it. I have a food addiction that I've been fighting for a very long time. Right now I am experiencing control for the first time in a very long time. I know that most of it is the grace of Christ. I'm glad He is faithful even when I am not. But I believe He brought me here so I'm relaxing in that.
        Thanks again for sharing.

          Hey "Peterlock",
Thanks so much for the advice. I like the idea of the six small meals. One of the things that I've noticed is when I don't eat I get tired. Not really a physical tiredness but a mental/emotional tiredness. That's a red flag for me. When I felt that way in the past I was 'use drugs'. Not the kind of drugs that most people think of. My drug of choice was food. It gave me a high similar to heroin. If you're of an addictive nature you know what happens. The more 'drugs' you consume the more you'll need the next time. It's a Ravenous Beast that is never satisfied.
So thanks for the info. I have been trying to eat at least a piece of cheese or even drink more water.

          Be well-

            Hi Jade,

Isn't it wonderful! But I have to agree with these folks, eat something small at the very least. A few olives, string cheese, something. Keep in mind that you are fueling your body now, it's straight up math. If you lower your calorie intake too much, your metabolism will adjust accordingly and slow down. You don't want that, you want it to be a fat burning machine! Fuel that fire and keep it burning! :guns

              Hey "earlychildhoodeducator"!
Thanks for taking the time to share! I appreciate it! I have gotten some of my appetite back but take for example today. I woke up, not hungry. So I ate some beef anyway. Drank my water all day long. Early morning snack I ate a piece of string cheese. For lunch I had a salad with chicken and dressing. But since I've gotten home I haven't had anything yet so I'm about to go up and try to eat at least maybe an egg and some bacon.
I totally agree with you about fueling my body. I like looking at this food plan that way instead of viewing food as 'drugs to get high on' like I use to when my addiction was in full force. It's so lovely having control for a change!
Thanks again for being in my corner! I appreciate it!

                As always, Peter is right.

Jade, I know you're not hungry and can relate, believe me. But the truth is, you need to keep your blood sugar levels on an even keel and that can only be accomplished by not going more than 6 hours without eating at least a little something.

A hard boiled egg and some fat will do nicely. It doesn't need to be a full meal, just something in your tummy to keep your metabolism cranking.

                You're doing super!

                Betty

It's just so nice to be in a place where I can relate to others. That sounds excactly like what I use to eat like, I'd eat, and eat then enjoy the rush and take a nap, over and over. In this case, beig in control is a very good feeling huh. :joy

                    Hey Betty!
Thanks for sharing! I've been taking all of your great advice and am hanging in there. It's such an odd feeling for me not to be hungry when in the past I've been so programmed to eat whenever I want whether I'm hungry or not! I love having this control but I also don't want to get stuck! So far I'm continuing to lose and I still feel fine. But I know what will happen if I stop eating all together...my body will think I'm starving and will shut down. That's happened to me before on very low calorie diets.
So, onward and downward (weight/dress size wise!). Thanks again for the encouragement! I appreciate it!

                      Hey ECE!
You are so right! It feels so weird not to be hungry when in the past I was so driven by food! What is even more odd is that those foods that once had a 'god-like' status in my life are not even desirable anymore! On Mother's Day our church gave out Hershey bars with little pink covers on them that said Mother's Day on one side and a special verse on the other. Without barely looking at it I said, 'Oh, I can't have this.' and passed it on to my teenage daughter. But it wasn't so much that I couldn't have it because it wasn't allowed on my food program, but more that I didn't even desire it! In the past, I would've had it half eaten while proclaimin, 'Oh, well, I'll start my diet tomorrow.' But of course, tomorrow never came. I'm sure you've been there too!
Thanks for sharing! It's a relief to know that there are others who can relate to the horrors of food addiction.

                      Be well-
