  • Coffee has carbs?

I was looking on the Dunkin Donuts website and looked at nutrition in a cup of non flavored coffee. It said it had 3 carbs. I am shocked,i figured it was 0. I never counted coffee. I reduced my caffiene intake but cant go w/o completly or i will never get through a day.

Depending on the carb counter you use, 6 fluid ounces of coffee has 0.6 to 0.8 net carbs. Add in the sweetener packet (1 net carb), plus the heavy cream (0.4-0.7 net carbs per tablespoon depending on the carb counter), and you're looking at a beverage that uses up about 3 net carbs. That's why I decided to not even drink decaf during Induction---it wasted 3 net carbs I could spend on a higher carb veggie.

But you and the others reading this thread have learned an important lesson---count the carbs to everything you put in your mouth. The other lesson is almost everything has carbs and it's better to check it out before you eat or drink it.

As for your caffeine, you've probably read in your DANDR 2002 that caffeine has the tendency to lower the blood sugar and therefore cause symptoms of blood sugar instability, like cravings, hunger, headaches, light-headedness, etc. Blood sugar instability isn't a good thing for this WOE because part of the weight loss depends on keeping your blood sugar stable---so Dr. Atkins said to avoid caffeine.

You can detox yourself one of two ways: cold turkey or gradually decreasing your caffeine intake, by substituting decaf for part of your regular until you eventually are drinking all decaf.

i don't need the java man

Coffee may be the very thing that is making you feel tired.

Before Atkins, I used to adore coffee and I felt the way that you do.
I thought I needed it to get through the day.

I did not want to give it up and I felt very stubborn about it.

However, the good moderators here kept encouraging me to give it up. And I'm glad they did.

I soon discovered that coffee was spiking my blood and giving me a false high which was soon followed by a big dip - thus leading me to yet another cup of coffee. An addictive cycle that was not benefiting me.

For that reason I gave coffee up and switched to decaf and it really is amazing how much better I feel without that constant up and down in my day.

Substances that take us on a daily roller coaster ride
are best deleted from our lives.

Give up the coffee. You won't regret it. It will only be hard for about a week. And then you will be free and clean and on an even keel.

Ditch the coffee! I finally did after whining and complaining about it. It took me about 2 days of caffiene withdrawals...but i made it! Just think what you could use those extra carbs for?
