  • FIRST POST - Diet Soda

Hello - I am new to this board but not new to Adkins. I do have a quick question regarding diet sodas - why are we supposed to stay away from aspartame-based products?

I do have the Copywright 1992 version of New Diet Revolution as well as an earlier version. I have read it (1992) several times but this one issue escapes me.

    Many thanks in advance-
    Ana

    yep... avoid with a vengence...

go ahead and get the new one... it's only about $5 at wal-mart..

    a few things changed...

the drinks with splenda are ok they say... (like diet rite).. but don't count them in your water consumption

it really doesn't say.. on page 128 it says "We discourage the use of aspartame. (marked as NutraSweet* and Equal*)..

I suspect like the others, it might interfere with blood sugar....

I'd read other articles that in some people.. Aspartame causes appetite INCREASES ..

As mentioned, please do get yourself the newer 2002 version of DANDR, as that's what we follow on this board.

Aspartame has been shown to stall weight loss in some people and Dr. Atkins discourages it's use.

I don't know about you, but I want this weight off me asap! lol

I've wondered this too. Part of the reason I've been able to stick to this WOE is because of the reasons WHY it works.

So... all things being equal, if I ate the same food and exercised the same amount, but one day I drank diet coke with nutrasweet, and the next day I drank diet rite with splenda, would there really be a difference?

Maybe the nutrasweet stalls weight gain IF it increases your appetite and IF you end up eating more because of that. Or, if there's some chemical or physiological activity happening in the body as a result of aspartame, I'd like to know what it is!

maybe because aspartame is amino acids.. so it's actually metabolized.. so that changes things.... splenda isnt' metabolized by the body... just scoots right through...

Effie - great minds think alike! I'm all about the WHY - that knowledge will arm me so I make the right decisions.

Moochie - I just noticed you sid "2002 version" - duh - 2002! Here I have this 1992 version and just focusing on the "2" at the end and thinking I have the same version. I'll have to stop by the store later and pick the new one up.

ALthough I will say this old paperback was the key to my success 6 years ago and helped me stay successful for over 2 years. Don't ask what happened and why I'm back to being a fatty....so embarassing!

He discouraged aspartame in the 1992 version of the diet too. In fact, the 1992 edition is where he stated that he noticed if some people had excessive amounts of aspartame, their weight loss stopped or slowed down. He defined "excessive" as 3 or more servings daily.

Nope, you're not dreaming. Some of my posts lately have been doubled (the board is doing something weird to them). I've had a couple of posts not even post too....

Hi, I'm a newbie to this board, but have lots of diet "experience." I have learned from history that if I drink diet drinks, with aspertane, that it sets up cravings for sweets for me. I don't know why, just that it does. I have read that aspertane is known to set up cravings, but didn't discover that fact until I discovered it on my own.
God, I don't want to die fat!

Here is a very eye opening article on aspartame. Its pretty long winded, but it gets the point accross that its just not good for a persons health. My mom was having headaches and had to get off aspartame, and started using splenda.
