I am currently very overweight at 203 lbs and 5'5". If I start the Atkins Diet, how much can I expect to lose in my first few weeks or so? I'd like to lose weight as fast as I possibly can (without endangering my health of course), so that I can go to beach and whatnot and not feel totally embarassed this summer. :sadblinky

Re: Thinking of starting the Atkins Diet...
Hey "hsmommyto1"]
Welcome! We're glad you're considering Atkins. Could I suggest that you read the most current edition of the Atkins book? (2000 DANDR) This will give you an idea of what you will be eating and how the plan works.
This is NOT a diet. This is a totally new lifestyle. If you're going to use it to lose weight fast then go back to your old eating habits then you might want to reconsider.
However, I'm sure that if you try it, you will become a believer. You'll lose weight but more importantly you'll lose cravings, you'll gain control over your eating habits maybe for the first time in your life.
I hope you will give it a try. I think you'll be happy you did!
Be well-

LOL Cleo!!! You crack me up!!
As everyone has said, there is no real answer. It depends on how bad you have messed up your metabolism with other diets.
You can expect to lose 5-10% of what you want to lose in the first 2 weeks. Again, that's not promised. We have a Mod who is a goalie that didn't lose anything during induction, but finally lost her weight during OWL.
Make sure you get a copy of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution 2002 or newer. Until you get that, read the stickies in the forum. It will help you get started.
Welcome to
ha you will feel ALOT better when you get started!

For me, and this is a guys point of view, I concentrate more on what I can eat than what i weigh. If you do atkins by the book, you will no doubt be at the weight that you desire to be at, but its not going to happen overnight. It will take time and being persistent at each phase. I'm by far not at maintenance level, but have already gained a whole lot of knowledge about foods in general, and thats a plus anyday. Its really good to get to know about our food intake. Atkins helps a person to be more conscientious about what their eating, and that has helped me to make healthier food choices.
Thats my 2 cents anyway, hope it helps.Restarting Atkins April 9th 2010

let freedom ring
I highly recommend you begin Atkins as soon as you have read the book, understood the science behind Atkins, cleared your kitchen of frankenfoods, and purchased healthy, wholesome, unprocessed food.
In addition to losing weight there are many other benefits to this healing lifestyle. Overcoming carb addiction and sugar addiction is so very good for the mind and soul.
You will like yourself again, and when you walk on the beach in your new suit, you will not be embarressed - you will feel empowered!
