  • Whey protein?

I was wanting to add a Whey Protein shake into my day to help me up my protein level. The powder I found only has 4 carbs & <1 sugar and it's sweetened with Splenda. I was wondering if this is allowed since whey is a milk product. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks so much!!

What's your current protein level? Protein should only comprise 30% of your daily calories....

I have a hard time making myself eat lunch during the day so i know I don't get as much as I should. I'm not really sure how much I have a day. A typical day is this:

      Breakfast
      3 eggs
      2 slices bacon

      Lunch (if I eat it)
      String cheese
      hot dog

      Dinner
      Salad

Open a free account at http://www.fitday.com so you can track your daily carbs and see if your fat/protein/carb ratio is okay for Induction.

If that's your typical menu, you need to spread your veggies out. Saving them all up for one meal can cause a spike in your blood sugar and part of the weight loss on Atkins depends on keeping your blood sugar level.

Don't fall into the trap of thinking that Atkins is a high protein diet. Atkins is a high fat diet.

best thing is to use fitday.com to keep track of what you eat, you can see there exactly how much % you ate of everything, go for 65% fat/ 30% protein/ 5% carbs
Also you should really spread your vegetables over the day, really try to eat some for lunch too for example, or how about adding some mushrooms at breakfast for example.
Make sure you eat 3 cups of veggies, if you eat those all for dinner you get all your carbs at once and that's not so good.

[edit] LOL not2late and me saying the same things I was typing when she was posting, so sorry if it seems like we're all falling over you at once :wave

As you are surmising - milk products are not 'legal' for induction.
If you do decide to have the protein shakes wait till you are on the dairy rung of OWL.
But as suggested do find out what your fat/protein/carb ratios are before adding a large amount of protein to your menus.
If you are following induction rules correctly you will probably find your ratios fall naturally into the 65%/30%/5% range :hug
I didnt discover fitday till a few months into induction so had no way of telling what my ratios were but when I fed some random past daily menus into fitday I found the ratios had been very close to the 65/30/5 mark.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

              Re: Whey protein?

              Hey "momof3"
I had the same question about using whey powder on this food plan, so I went to the Atkins website and this is what I found:

"Whey protein isolate (WPI) is considered the highest quality protein available in terms of the body's ability to utilize it. It is extremely low in carbohydrate, high in protein and contains virtually no fat. It has also been shown to possess immune-boosting capabilities by increasing the body's cellular levels of glutathione, an important anti-oxidant. WPI is an ingredient in AtkinsTM Shake Mix."

So I really can't see why you couldn't have it on Atkins since one of his products is made from it. Just check the label for any hidden carbs.

              Be well-

As Jade said - do check the label for other ingredients - like milk!! The quote said 'WPI is AN ingredient' - not the only ingredient - so you do need to make sure any other ingredients are suitable for the stage of Atkins you are currently on.

Also as has been said, you might be adding more protein than you want to be eating to keep it at 30% of your food intake. Atkins is not a high protein WOE!!

if you notice they said whey protein isolate since her shake has 4 carbs it has a whey protein concentrate not just isolate and the concentrates have lactose in them milk sugar.
protein isolates are fine for any phase of atkins and fit in the protein catagory. protein concentrated do not they fit in that catagory of proteins Dr Atkins called mixed carbohydrate/proteins like nuts and legumes and are OWl foods for the rung of that food group from which they were created be they soy, wheat, rice, milk,or any other food.

                  happy low carbing.

                    Hey "2big4mysize"
I think that's why it's very important to become a good label reader. There are very good whey powders out there that are pure protein. So as you said if it is pure protein then it would be ok to consume? For my part, I have to admit that the taste of whey powder grosses me out! However, they do have products like the ones Dr. Atkins was speaking of that are tolerable. It's the aftertaste that does me in.
