  • Choosing goal weight?

For mine I looked up on several websites after googleing weight chart, and found some surprises. What I saw mostly after I put in my age, gender, and height, was a number I thought was very low. To get a 'healthly' BMI of 22 or so, I'd have to weigh about 155lbs, which I know to my friends and family I would look like I had an eating disorder!

So, not sure how realistic these charts are, I'm going to keep losing and see how I look and feel, and perhaps adjust my goal weight as needed

I think even 160-165 would be ok

That's a really excellent attitude, Steve!
That's what I'm planning on doing. My doctor and I looked at a chart and it said 125 was the weight to go for, but I think I'll just find out where my body is happy.
I'm more interested in what size clothes I'll be wearing than the number on the scale..lol

I think you should choose a goal weight once you get closer to where you think you might want to be. Too many factors like amount of muscle don't get factored into those charts.

I have left my goal weight open for right now. It was 150.....but right now i'm in the 180's and i'm still a size 16 size i'm thinking that i'm gonna have to adjust. When i do get to 150 i will see if I need to loose more. On all those websites it's telling me 120 - 130...so...i'm in the same boat as ya!

I agree with Iwillbethin- my goal is 150 but I have to see how I feel and look and decide from there.

I agree with the majority here.. those charts are not realistic.

I used to run road races a few years ago. They had a category for heavier females called the "filly" category. To be a filly, you had to weigh over 140 pounds. You should have seen the women in this category! If you were solid muscle and can run a 6 minute mile for 5 miles, then congratulations, you're a filly! These women were definitely not overweight at all, yet I bet they'd show up as overweight on any of these charts. I guess women aren't supposed to have muscles to be considered "normal". :sarcasm

BMI is a good tool to use for your "healthy" weight range. My healthy weight range is 110-140. But everyone carries weight differently. So, I figure when I get to 135, I'll see how I feel/look/etc. If I like that weight/size, then I'll say "Goal!". If not, I'll drop 5 more pounds, and re-evaluate.

I sat down with my doctor and we set my goal weight for 160, once I get there, I'll see how I feel. I think I am definately going to be a filly, I'm just naturally muscular and tend to build muscle easily.

I originally set my my goal too low - but Dr, Atkins said too many of us do not set our goals high enough - so I have set my goal for 125 lbs. and will keep looking in that direction! Who knows, I may 'adjust' once I get near, but I really want to go all the way!

The Irony behind this is that its the same problem, just ran into it differently.

The scale. I don't follow the scale numbers, for the "filly" reason. I say, take your LBM, and shoot for a body fat percent. Thats what I am doing. My doctor told me that due to muscle mass and bone structure that 215-230 would be an ideal weight. Now if I lost a bunch of Muscle mass, I could weigh 185lbs or so like the "health chart" says, but noodles to that! :nono
