Favourite curry recipes - Let's share!

Do you know there is a Food and Cooking Chat forum for all your questions about food amounts, finding new recipes, any food talk really?

I am interested in hearing from Ext Inductioners with Induction-friendly curry recipes. If you don't have one, come over and list a curry that you have been eating/making while you have been on Atkins - you never know, someone may come up with the recipe for you to try at home!

A curry is basically an Indian stew. I think the word "curry" has its origins in a Tamil (south Indian) word ‘kari’ meaning "spiced sauce". These days the term ‘curry’ has come to mean almost any Indian dish - it would mean a meat, vegetable or fish dish with spicy sauce and rice or bread.

I know some of the ingredients may be a little difficult to get, so how about going into your local supermaket and seeing if they have ready made bottles of curry sauce, or even curry powder? Curry powder generally doesn't have sugar and easily found in Fitday. You could start off with a little and use it to marinade some meat, and if you like the flavour, add more and make a meat dish with the curry sauce.

Curry is virtually our national dish here in the UK - ask a Brit for their favourite dish and 75% will say "chicken tikka masala" - and is very addictive. If you leave out the bread and rice it adapts really well to low carb eating. The basic sauce is ghee (butter), minced onions and tomatoes (cream if you're having a korma), with lots of herbs and spice - chilli, paprika, coriander, cumin and others, slow cooked. Main meats used are lamb and chicken. I opt for vegetable accompaniments such as aubergine or a small portion of dahl which is lentils. A plain yogurt sauce with mint (raita) takes the heat out. Delicious!

Do you know how chicken tikka masala was created? You could almost say the Brits created it because back in the colonial days, they adapted one of the hot curries, added tomatoes and cream to lessen the heat, and voila! a new dish was born and I must say, curries are fantastic in the UK! :yes

Anyone have an actual recipe? I'm afraid if I tried to make it using the directions above (lotsa spices) I would probably fail somewhere along the way. lol

Hey Finelly - you do realise you CAN add peanuts and raisins?

That's the beauty of curries - it's just like a casserole, only Indian-style, and I've even seen Jamie Oliver make a pineapple & veg curry!

hmmm... yeah, the fruits & nuts thing is hard to give up until you reach OWL.

Do you have any favourite meats or veg that you could throw into a curry?
You can even use Splenda :yes (if it doesn't cause problems for you) to sweeten the curry, plus adding tomatoes (but you have to watch the carbs on that in Ext Induction)
