  • Jif Extra Crunchy Peanut Butter

    Hi all,

    I have issues...

    Yesterday mom baked a banana cake... only my favorite cake in the world, but there ya go... So i has taken all my will power to steer clear - even though yesterday I pretty much sucked up all the crumbs off the cake... I know, stupid, but it was sitting in front of me smelling soooo good...

    So, today I cane home and my sis was eating a big hunk of the cake with WHIPPED CREAM on top, and my eyes just popped out of my head right there...

    I was so desperate for something to sooth me I went to the cupboard and grabbed the peanut butter (Jif Extra Crunchy) and ate 2 teaspoonfuls. It has 7g of carbs per serving, but I don't know what a serving is... Have I just killed myself??? I don't mean to sound dumb, but I feel soooo stupid. I don't know why it bugs me so much when people flaunt these things in front of me - most of the time everyone is great and hides them or whatever...

    Help!!!

    The serving size is listed on the label. Usually near the top of the nutritional info, it will say what a serving is. Mind you, the serving size listed on the labels are measured serving sizes. Meaning they use standard cooking measuring devices, like measuring spoons and measuring cups, to measure these things out. So if your 2 teaspoonfuls of peanut butter was really 2 tablespoons when measured using cooking tablespoon measures, then you'll have to adjust your carbs accordingly.

      What a rotten thing for them to do to you :hug
      Perhaps you can make sure you always have a 'legal' treat handy for emergencies?
      They do know you are eating Atkins I hope? If not you need to recruit them into your support team as Dr Atkins suggested.

        One serving of Peanut Butter is typically 2 tablespoons. Also don't forget to subtract the fiber from the total carb count. (seems like peanut butter generaly ends up at about 4net carbs) YEAH!!you chose peanut butter instead of Banana Cake. Good for you. This way of eating is all about making better choices and that was certainly a better choice!!!! Once you get to OWL and up a few rungs it is even legal!!!! Now before someone jumps on my case, I am not condoning eating foods off of the inducion list, I am just saying there are worst choices you could have made. Chin up!

          I lovvee... BANANA CAKE! All this talk is making want some!

          But going for the peanut butter was SO much better than eating the cake! Props to you!

          Hey, maybe you should go out and get some natural peanut butter, no added sugar... I think it's tastier too. Just so if you must eat SOMETHING, you'll be eating less carbs, and no sugar

            I agree with Texwife. You certainly could have done much worse, AND peanut butter is a legal thing for those on Extended Induction. Dr. A allows for the return of nuts for those extending Induction beyond 14 days, and the allowed peanut butter is usually just peanuts and salt. (I usually buy Organic PB and eat it with celery or just plain with a spoon.)

            Jif PB might not be with its sugar, but like Texwife you made the better choice than banana bread.

              Really?! tell me more please...i didn't know you could add any non-regular induction foods in extended induction! What chapter is this in? or page if you know? I am on extended induction, I had no clue nuts were ok...

                Here are the passages:
                After the first two weeks of Induction, when you can introduce nuts and seeds into your menus, you will find they make excellent snacks and often an unexpected and tasty ingredient in an entree or vegetable dish. You can also use ground nuts and seeds in lieu of breading before baking or sauteing chicken breasts, veal scallops or fish fillets. Like all good things, nuts and seeds should be eaten in moderation. An ounce of most nuts or seeds contains roughly 5 grams of carbs.

                Eat absolutely no fruit, bread, pasta, grains, starchy vegetables or dairy products other than cheese, cream or butter. Do not eat nuts or seeds in the first two weeks. Foods that combine protein and carbohydrates, such as chickpeas, kidney beans and other legumes, are not permitted at this time.

                Nuts IMO were one of the special cases in Dr. A's mind for those people who planned on long induction periods. They are a tricky thing with portion control, but add a nice snack opportunity to one's diet.

                    Just to clarify watch peanut butter. Most commercial brands not only contain sugar but are also made with trans fats. Read labels. Organic peanut butters or 'pure' nut butters have just nuts, nothing else.

                      Well, if you really want to complicate matters even more....peanuts aren't nuts or seeds: they are legumes so they technically shouldn't be introduced until OWL.

                        Fortunately for those food origin unwise, Dr. A always listed peanuts under nuts and seeds. See list of nuts of seeds on p 114 (Power of 5), p 130 (Power of 10), and p 229. He does have company though as even the USDA lists peanuts in the meat, eggs, and nuts section of their classic pyramids.
