Just do what I do...DONT TELL THEM! My dr. knows but that's about it. When someone i havent seen in a while asks me what i'm doing i just tell them exercising and watching what i eat. If I told them Atkins they would probably freak too!

Your Trainer sounds just like mine. Know what swayed mine? My bloodwork. I had my cholesterol, blood glucose and Triglycerides checked a few months into Atkins. He saw the difference between when I was on Atkins and when I was just working out and "dieting." He still doesn't trust Atkins but he had to admit it wasn;t hurtingOriginally posted by wannabethintooThis personal trainer is highly educated with a Masters degree in some fitness-related field. He has been very successfull in helping people lose weight. He's a ****-type trainer which is what I need. I had my first work-out last night and it was brutal. I'll take his exercise advise and ignore his diet advise.

My doctor is afraid to have a blood test done because he thinks it will tarnish my perfect cholesterol record. Even though I'm overweight I do not have any health issues (no high bp, no high cholesterol, no diabetes...nothing). He's afraid that a blood test will come back with high cholesterol and that will be on record and will affect any insurance rating.

Go to an independent and get it done for your own information. Here White Drug has pharmacy students that do blood draws (cholesterol, blood glucose and Triglycerides) for minimal costs. I think the whole blood panel my Dr. did is $18 there. Make sure to specify you want the whole panel, that would include your breakdown of LDL and HDLFemale/45/5'5

*blinks* Maybe it's just me, but I find that kinda disturbing. Your doctor is afraid to find out bloodwork results because of insurance?????? Holy crap! And I speak as a fellow Canadian!Originally posted by wannabethintooMy doctor is afraid to have a blood test done because he thinks it will tarnish my perfect cholesterol record. I tell ya, I stay confused on the whole low carb/exercise issue. I finally got a copy of the 2002 DANDR and just finished reading the section on exercise. Dr. A talks about fat loading instead of carb loading (not that I'm carb loading mind ya), but doesn't elaborate. Well gee whiz, that was helpful.. :sarcasm
I'm a details person. I want to know WHY and WHAT and HOW, etc.... I research everything. Trying to figure out what I should and shouldn't be doing and so forth, well I stay confused, and I don't like it! :raving
Sorry, just venting....

If Dr. Atkins had to explain everything, DANDR would be an encyclopedia!
A lot of the FAQ's on this site explain a lot.
My cholesterol is way down. My LDL is so low it's off the chart.
Tri's are way down too.
There are "health fairs" where you can get your chol tested for free or a nominal fee. They have one in my building every couple of months.

You're in the US. They don't have those here in Canada. Blood test results can only be given to a doctor.Originally posted by Iapetus999If Dr. Atkins had to explain everything, DANDR would be an encyclopedia!

I do understand your desire for cheaper life insurace....however, any doctor who would care more about the cost of insurance than with your health is one doctor I'd stay away from.Originally posted by wannabethintooIt's because my husband has the same doctor and he recently went through the ordeal of getting life insurance. My doctor had to provide his medical records and if you have the slightest health problem life insurance rates get very high (at our age).
I don't mean to sound harsh, but, his first concern should be your health...period. And, if he already has 'concerns' with you doing Atkins (although we are all very confident his concerns can be put to rest) he should be on that blood panel faster than you can say 'ouch!'.
Your health is sooo much more important than money...and just think what fun it will be to prove your doctor wrong! :nodTara

I had a close friendship with the fitness director at my gym in AZ, and Atkins was one of the things we couldnt agree on. She was more in line with Muscle and Fitness or Oxygen's eating recommendations, low fat protein, whole complex carbs, no processed sugars/carbs etc. It is called, in fitness competition, at least "eating clean"...
Tell your trainer you are eating clean.. leave the percentages out of it.. and then try it. Get your fat from lean protein, eggs, avocado, small amts of cheeses, healthy fats, etc. That is what we are sposed to be doing, ideally, right? Whole veggies, when grains are reintroduced, they are whole grains, low glycemic fruits -not jams or syrups, lots of berries and melons.. It is the same way of saying the same things.. without bringing in the percentages. Explain that you are trying to eat whole foods, blah blah blah..
That was how my friend and I found common ground. After that, we were speaking the same language.
Just my 25 cents..

Same goes for me, but the nurse at our practice doesn't like the fat part either. You'd think she'd be just grateful I'm losing weight :nodOriginally posted by higgiesI'm not an expert, but I have never eaten so healthy in my life. I think if you looked at most people's diets, you would see 65% or more fat in the diet and that being bad fats. At least we're eating natural unprocessed fats for the most part. I dunno...just my 2 cents. I eat more veggies and natural foods than ever before.
