  • Advice on Stall

    Any advice gratefully accepted...
    Here are the details...
    - 5'1"; 167 lbs
    - on extended induction since June of 2004
    - lost 70 lbs and 50 inches
    - average about 6lbs/months
    - fairly strict adherence to 20gs of carbs/induction foods
    - no recent changes in food list
-exercise 6-7 times/week (running and weight training)
-very good experience so far (no cravings, not difficult to stay "clean", no cheats
-drink about 2 litres of water a day
So - here is the problem - I've got about 25-30 lbs to go and I'm in a stall...by your definition! No weight loss, no inches lost for about 6 weeks. I'm prepared to try reasonable "cures" such as moving to OWL, adding different foods, etc (not sure about the "fat fast"...but hey!...whatever!)

For reference here's my typical menu:
    B = protien shake/flax cereal/coffee with cream (3-4gs carbs)
L = green salad, chicken or tuna (3-4gs carbs)
D= green salad, veggie, grilled chicken/steak/chop

Some occasional snacks (since week three) include: Geni Soy low carb crisps and low carb chocolate (Ross)

At any rate, I'd appreciate your advice - I'm not wavering but I am frustrated!

Time to move onward ... do not fear moving into OWL ....

If you've been basically at the same level of carbs for a year, its time to shake things up a bit! Add more fat too!

Great job with the water and exercise, that's awesome!!

I would nix the snacks though ...

      Molly dear, OWL isn't a "cure", it's a REQUIREMENT
Have a peek for yourself, go to the OWL forum and have a read - sure you'll hear about many OWLers who have difficulties with OWL, but more often then not, they will tell you that they started losing again or even lost much more when they moved onto OWL. Here's one of the OWL threads as a good example:

Good luck!!! You won't regret moving onto OWL!

70 pounds and 50 inches, you are my hero! It sounds like you are already eating some of the things on OWL, so maybe you should start moving through the rungs. How much more weight do you want to lose? I figure you started around 237 and you are a shorty like me (I'm 5 foot 2 1/2), now you are down to 167, you must look really great! You want to come out at the end having gone through all the rungs of OWL, pre-maintence and maintence.

Molly, don't hesitate, MOVE ON. OWL is waiting for you! It's the best move I made 2 weeks ago, and there's no looking back for me now. You'll find OWL more flexible, and more food options, as you start adding back more carbs. Go for it girl, you can do it! Congrats on your successes so far!

                Re: Advice on Stall

With the addition of the genisoy soy chips, you've been doing the Modified OWL, by skipping all the other rungs and adding the legume rung. Remember, "extended Induction" is ADBB's term for someone who chooses to extend their Induction phase beyond the minimum 14 days. By extending Induction, you still have to follow the Induction rules (no legumes among other things) and eat only what's on the Induction Acceptable Foods list.

Do your body a favor and follow the diet as Dr. Atkins wrote in the book. I do realize that people will point out that the book gives an example of someone who lost all her weight doing only Induction, but these people tend to ignore the fact that this person had a high metabolic resistance to weight loss and that people with a high metabolic resistance to weight loss need to keep their carbs between less than 20 per the book. The majority of people have average to low metabolic resistance and it's quite unnecessary to keep daily carbohydrates that artificially low in order to lose weight.

Wow. I feel chastised. Fair enough. But, just for the record...I only use the soy product when absolutely nothing else is available - for instance when I travel for work and there's no appropriate meal on cross country flights.

And finally - I most certainly HAVE done "my body a favour" for the last year by cutting carbs, exercising and making healthy food choices. I no longer suffer from migraines which were absolutely debilitating previously. So - while I appreciate the advice - there's no need at all to scold me into further action.

I'm sorry if you took what I wrote as "chastisement" and "scolding", but I'm only pointing out the facts. "Extended Induction" just means you are extending the Induction phase past the minimum 14 Days and you're still playing by the same rules as you did in the first 14 days by following the Rules and eating only what's on that Induction Acceptable Foods list. It's not a "new" phase at all, eventhough some folks in this forum tend to treat it like it is.

And yes, you have done your body a favor by cutting out the bad carbs. But you're not doing it a favor by withholding the good carbs OWL provides. You have to remember that since you've lost alot of weight you have a new body with new energy/nutritional requirements. This stall could be your body's way of telling you to move on.

Yikes! I've been doing the Induction phase since Feb 5, pretty strictly - I've tried NO recipes. Moving on to OWL wasn't even an option for me until I lost another 20 pounds before reading these posts - I've been complaining about the stall I've been in for the past 3 1/2 weeks! (20 pounds lost so far). BTW - I'm a rejoiner too - lost 35 pounds 2 years ago and love the way my body feels on this program! Thanks so much for all the great advice everyone!
