  • Summertime Blues

I get down and depressed every July and I don't know why. Anybody else go through this? I know there is something called SAD that people get in the wintertime, but I get it in the summer. I'm usually a very happy go lucky person, I love life and I don't let things get me down, but every July I find myself in a slump. Maybe it's that it gets so hot and humid here in Maryland that it's hard to do anything outside, I don't know. What do "ya-all" think? Is there a cure for the summertime blues?

I get like that also, I think it is because I am heavy and I get extra hot, plus I like the extra security of soft winter clothes and its easier to hide in, im just happier in the winter anyway. you are doing great!!!!

      Re: Summertime Blues

I'll tell ya I prefer cold to hot, always have. But, here's a thought about what makes me annoyed in the summertime (this week actually)...dumb girls in little clothes that make them look nice (I guess..slutty is the word I think, but whatever) and people staring at them like they are the greatest things in the world.
Of course, no mention of common sense, intelligence, or kindness, just "she's hot" and in my mind (and often outloud) I say, "Wait till she opens her mouth" My brother always says about this one brainless wonder, "Well, why can't she just walk around and keep her mouth closed. I'll look for a while." I am not talking shorts or bathing suits even, I'm talking "The airline lost my clothes and all they game me to wear was a kindergarten girl's shorts and this piece of string with a napkin."

Then again, it might jsut be the lack of Christmas presents in July...nah, that isn't it. It's gotta be the other thing.

I HATE summer. Everyone thinks I'm mad and my husband and I have endless arguments over this. I love the cold weather, I like dark winter nights. I don't look forward to summer at all - to me it's just a nightmare to get through until autumn.
I'm glad you posted this - I really thought I was the only one.

SAD can actually happen in either winter or summer. I just recently read that somewhere but for the life of me I can't remember if it was the newspaper or magazine. If I remember correctly it suggested the opposite of what winter SAD sufferers do...to actually sit in a dark cool room for awhile everyday to try to alleviate symptoms. You might want to talk to your doctor depending on how deep your level of sadness is. I don't know a lot about this website but here's a link to show what I'm talking about... http://www.clevelandclinic.org/healt...asp?index=9293Although they don't go into the treatment of summer SAD...sorry about that. I'll see if I can dig up some more information for you.

I get mad at all the small little tiny clothes in stores and that's all you see. I also get mad at the fact when i exercise there's not cool breeze coming off the lake like usual it's just a hot nasty humid gross wind coming onto me. Ok...i think i'm better now!

I much prefer winter. I like snuggling up with the fireplace on (yeah...like that goes on alot around my house)! Ok...i think i've rambled enough.

I hear ya sister of the hot, humid south!! I despise summer, and in the south, that lasts about 6 months of the year, with NO break!

Know what bothers me? Those women with thick, long hair, that wear it down in this horrid heat and humidity. I wanna smack 'em and tell 'em it's too hot to wear their hair like that, now get it in a pony tail or sumthin'...!!

Ok, I think I'm better now too!

I prefer the heat to the cold. I can't stand being cold! BUT I just came in from outside and I am drenched in sweat!! Have to love whoever invented air conditioning!!!

I have long thick hair that I wear down a lot in summer but it's because my ears stick out and I'm self concious (sp?) about it. If I had the 3K it takes to fix though my hair would be in a pony tail every minute through summer!!! Lol! I'm used to it though and it doesn't bother me down. Now if I lived somewhere humid I'd probably get over it in a hurry and wear it up anyway. I hate humidity!!!!

I have long thick hair that I wear down a lot in summer

Same here - this is the first year I've thought "To **** with it" and tied it up in some sort of mess on top of my head. Ok I look like a walking haystack but at least I get some breeze down the back of my neck and I don't get the great huge clumps of matted sweaty hair underneath. I SO want short straight hair but if I cut mine, I look like a freak so I'm stuck with what feels like a big thick quilt hanging down my back.

I have long hair too, but it's not thick, so I don't think it bothers me as much. Although it's normally in a ponytail during the weekend. I just don't always like it in a ponytail anymore. It's almost feels too long for a ponytail and annoys me at times when I it hits the back of my neck.

I wonder if weight has an effect though on how a person views a season. I know in high school, I LOVED Spring and Summer. I wasn't heavy and it seemed that I didn't get as hot as frequently. I do like it cold though. My house has to be a virtual icebox before I can fall asleep at night. But I have noticed that the heat isn't bothering me as much as it used to since I've lost the 50+ pounds.

Part of me wonders if I'll start to like summer a lot more once I got down to my goal weight and start wearing the type of clothing that looks best during the season, without feeling embarrassed.

I never used to bother about summer weather until about 15 years ago - stangely enough it was after I'd moved from London to the so-called cooler north. Not only do I NOT like exposing all the fat bits moving around in different directions all at once, I also HATE geting so sweaty.

                            Mjett37,

I live about 30 miles from Waldorf, right on the Chesapeake Bay. That may be another reason I don't like July, the jelly-fish come into the water and you can't swim in it while they are there without getting stung! Bugaboo, I do draw all my shades and sit in the cool dark and read everyday, there I was treating myself without knowing it.
My mother died July 5th, 32 years ago when I was 16, and my husband and I were going through a really bad patch, I came home from work one day in July to find he had packed all his stuff and was moving back home with his mother. That lasted about 4 months, so I guess I have good reason to feel bad in July. Have you ever heard that Dixie Chicks song Cold Day in July? That's me! I'm usually better by August, just don't like July.
