  • Cheated!

Well friends, I cheated for the first time ever. I made it through 5 months cheat free, but this weekend, I cheated. It wasn't a very big cheat, but it's a warning that something is wrong. I try to justify it by saying that my MS symptoms are back and I'm feeling sorry for myself, I have also had to forgo my exercise routine and I'm on experimental medication to try to get the MS under control that has a lot of side effects. My husband had a business trip and I tagged along just to get out of the house for awhile, we went out to a nice seafood resturant Saturday night, I had a salad & a seafood entree that was Atkins, but I ate a roll and one french fry. The worst part is, the roll wasn't even that good! Got right back on the diet Sunday, so hopefully it won't hurt me too much, but I really need to sit down and examine what is going on with me right now that would cause me to cheat!

    Re: Cheated!

Good for you for getting right back on the wagon. I find I cheat because something looks soo delish....def not bread or pasta though. I can't even look at that crap without my stomach turning over. My weakness is fried stuff ( aka crab rangoon!)

      Re: Cheated!

I can understand completely. I just cheated for the first time last night. I've been on Atkins for about 6 months and this was the first cheat. I'm not happy with myself, but I don't seem to have the overwhelming guilt that I thought I would have. TOM arrived yesterday morning, I had a huge headache all day, our house is a disaster area (we're going through everything to see what we want to keep and what needs to go to Goodwill), AND my last day at work was on Friday. So, I was a bit stressed. Although I'll be staying home with my daughter until she goes to school, then I'll be going back to school myself to get another Bachelor's degree or a Masters degree, the change is still stressful.

I had shrimp lo mein, crab rangoons, and a shrimp roll last night. This morning I'm back on track and I told my husband that after I clean the family room of all the junk that we moved in it, I'm going to be sure to double my exercising from now on.

But, I do have to say, that luckily, it didn't create any other cravings for me. I was so afraid after I had it that it would be hard to get back to eating healthy, like I was. But, that doesn't seem to be the case. So that's good. Now, I just have to make sure that I don't justify letting myself cheat again, since this didn't seem to make an impact.

I thought that eating something with carbs would send me off on a spiral too, but it didn't. I don't know if that's good or bad! I'm mean if you get away with cheating, will that make it easier to do again?

That's my fear also. I think, as far as I'm concerned, I'm just going to continue to do things like I was doing before yesterday, with the exception of exercising more often. I can't say that I won't cheat again, but hey ... if I can make it another 6 months without doing so, I think I can deal with that.

            Re: Cheated!

Well, every body that is sucessful on this diet say that it is a way of life, if you think of it that way, cheating every 6 months is just a minor blip on the radar screen of life LOL! I was just amazed at how quickly I went back to eating right, it used to be when I would be on low-fat diets I would cheat and beat myself up over it (while continuing to cheat) for a week or two before I could get myself together and start over again!

Me too, although I may be moving to OWL soon like you just did. I have at least 30 pounds still to lose. (30 pounds until I hit the goal I set, and then I'll see what weight I want to be after that. I'm guessing I want to get down to 125/130, but it's been so long since I've seen that weight, I'm not sure if it's possible. It's been since 10th grade in high school.)

But, back to what you were saying, I can recall on many low-fat diets I was on, once I cheated it was hard to stay away from those foods. Maybe because we stayed on the diet for so long before ever cheating, maybe it didn't hit us as hard. (I am not condoning cheating to anyone, I'm just hypothesising over the reasoning.)

I even did Michael Thurmond's 6 week body makeover and lasted for about 1.5 months, losing about 30 pounds. (240 down to 210) But once I cheated on that one, I couldn't go back on for the life of me. I can be a picky eater and that really limited my choices on what I could eat.

But, back to eating healthy. I'm going to see my cousin (who's like my sister) in 2 weeks and I'm going to see my family. They haven't seen me in months and I'm hoping to be down a total of 60-65 pounds by the time I see them. So, I have another 2-7 pounds to go. I know that's not much, but since I'm going to pump up the exercising, I know that sometimes inches come off first before the weight.
