  • Granny Apples!

I visited my grandma today. She loves to cook for me and my sister, and it makes her so happy when we visit. I really have to say, she has a remarkably good understanding of my diet, and prepared foods that were allowable for me to eat! Go Grandma!

The only thing was, for dessert, she proudly presented these gorgeous, plump granny smith apples, pleased that she selected a dessert for me that was low in sugar. I didn't want to end her wonderful dinner on a down note (I hadn't needed to refuse anything up to that point) because she really had gone to great lengths to adhere to my diet. So what I did was, I peeled off and ate strips of skin (plus maybe 1/4" thickness of the apple itself), giving the actual peeled fruit to my grandma. I figured that by only eating the fibrous part, I wasn't being totally bad, but still I'm not yet on the fruit rung, so I realize I was still out of bounds.

Fitday doesn't have an entry for Granny Smith apples, let alone just the skin, so I was wondering how many carbs I should count? Without the apple, my carb count for the day was 14 (21 total, 7 g fiber).

    thanks!
    -Sabrina

I wouldn't stress over it either, but if you want to enter it, just do however much of a cup of apple and figure on the low side.

It was very sweet of your Grandmother to cook well for you. The only alternative would maybe be to say, with a smile of thanks and a hug, 'I'm just too full. Can I take one with me, to have for a snack later?'.

Of all the apples Granny Smiths are probably the lowest in sugar, (carbs) and I wish my Grandma was still alive to cook for me. OMG she made the best apple pie. Anyway, there is tons of fiber in the skins so don't worry about them, and just move on. Tell you gram next time that berries and melons are next on the list.

Great! Thanks, everyone! I know I'm kind of nitpicking, but I've been in extended induction for 2 weeks now, and haven't been losing. So I'm kinda being anal...

Why don't you move into OWL? Fruits, like apples, are completely within bounds during OWL.

When I went home for a visit recently I had some strawberries, and I'm still in extended induction. They were perfectly ripe local strawberries, and I felt that if that was the worst of my slips, then I was doing quite well. I ate them with glee and still lost. I didn't stress about it and it didn't do anything to me, so my advice (like others') is to not worry about it.

Okay, there is something wrong. Why aren't you losing. Is it something we need to work on or what. Have you posted you meals? Are you eating any bars and shakes, drinking water, exercising. Are you losing inches. If you feel you have a problem, post what your eating, drinking and let the experts help.
