  • Need help with calories/BMR?

i don't think I am getting enough calories. I know this can affect my weight loss. I am not sure how to figure it out. I went to a web site that said to have 1800 calories but then there was an AMR also? Not sure what this all means. I am 27, 5 foot 9, 233 pounds, and I walk pushing a stroller for 20-25 minutes a day. Can anybody help me figure out how many calories I should be eating to lose weight. Right now I am only consuming approximatley 1200-1400 calories, but i am worried that this is not enough. I am not doing this intentionally, it just seems to be the "norm" for me on this diet. I ended up having a more fatty breakfast today and added cheese and sausage to the three fried eggs I usually have.

Fitday.com will help you determine your BMR! It did mine. Your caloric intake looks fine to me. If you are full and satisfied, then don't sweat it, especially at that caloric intake level. You're doing snazz.

What we aim for is eating between your BMR (basal metabolic rate, basically the calories you need to just live and breath) and your AMR (active metabolic rate, which takes into account exercise etc.). It does seem that you're really low on your caloric intake. If you have a fitday account, you can see charts with your BMR and AMR. There are lots of sites to figure out those numbers out there. Consider them all a guideline and not absolutely number perfect. The great thing about Atkins is the appetite suppression and I know it's difficult to eat a lot. I look at what I'm doing over several days, or a week even. There were days on induction that I only ate about 900 calories followed by days I would 2000. Over the course of several days I would average above my BMR. Stick to the rules of induction. Eat when you're hungry. Aim for 65% fat, 30% protein and 5% carbs. You'll be fine!

if you know your lean body mass or your body fat % you can use the Katch McArdle formula to get a very accurate BMR remember those fitday ones are general for all folk your height and weight regardkless of if they are a fluffy full of fat 233 pounds or a rock solid musclular 233 pounds. Asso many folk who have been over weight for a long operiod of time and yoyo dieters have slower then average metabolism and burn fewer cals too so those BMRs can be higher then what yours is.

Have you discussed your caloric intake with your doctor to see what a good number for you would be?

I have not been to the doctor since I had my son, he is 20 months old. I plan on doing that when I "have the time." Not big on being diagnosed with anything. I want to do a little to improve my situation before I go under the microscope!
