  • A Big Test!

    Hello, ALL!!!!

First, thanks for all the support everyone gives. What a nice place with nice people!!!

Yesterday, my lovely wife and I went to a movie for the first time since I started this WOE (started July 14, 2005). I have been a little hesitant because the smell of movie popcorn can be overwhelming. But, I prepared with my pork rinds and water and enjoyed a nice movie (Flightplan - I really liked this one!!). While I noticed the popcorn and it was verrry tempting, I refrained and ate my rinds!

Just wanted to share for others who are dealing with temptations. I have broken more diets than most of you can think of. I have been fat (no, I'm not heavy, thick, fluffy or anything else, I'm just fat....) all of my life and finally found something I think I can live with. I live in the deep south and have to get a little militant occasionally (what???? you don't eat fried chicken or hash browns or grits or biscuits???????), but I have lost 37.5 pounds in ten weeks and don't plan to look back. I am eating the best I have in my life and don't miss the junk. I pray God will help me get to the end of this. I am drawing inspiration from many of you and hope I can give back a little to others.

My goal is to lose 125 pounds, one at a time, and join the century club!. I am close to my first goal (started at 298.5, currently 261, looking for 250). My wife is very supportive, but we are eating different diets. It can work, it just takes some planning. If you are having problems with your family and this WOE, I understand. Just remind them regularly that what you are doing is and will impact them because a healthier you is a happier (and hopefully longer living) you!!

Remember, it's never to late to start. I'll be 50 shortly and feel better than I have in 10 years. Just be like a snowball: Start small and pick up steam as you roll downhill. Thanks for listening and God Bless!!!

You did great! I remember worrying about the movies too (I think I brought some cheese and summer sausage cubes). Now as time has gone on, I find I don't even care about having a snack at all. Never would I have thought that possible.

That's awesome! Popcorn is certainly the only food I really ever miss, and movies are hard for me too. I've found an ounce of sliced almonds (once you reach OWL - Nuts/Seeds) to be the perfect substitute for when I have the movie munchies.

          Re: A Big Test!

I still miss my popcorn and probably always will!
But I know how bad it was for me. At home I'd pop a bowl, salt and butter it (I would have been better off just eating the butter alone!!! lol) eat the whole big bowl, and then a half hour later I'd be prowling the kitchen looking for something else. I didn't realize it had such an effect on me until I learned the why's and wherefore's of what food does to your blood sugars. I vaguely remembered hearing something about it being an appetite stimulant, but that didn't stop me from mowing through a big bowl.

I'm in OWL, and the few times we go to the theater I'll take a little bag of nuts and a bottle of water. We aren't big theater people and we rent about 3 DVDs a year (yes, we're out of the loop..lol) so this wasn't a big deal for me...but that popcorn..omg...that was a big part of my life in the past!

                Heh, you sound like me.

For our wedding, we got this fantastic popcorn machine. Its not an air popper - its actually this round thing - you drop a bit of oil of your choice and the kernels on the element, throw the bowl on top, and plug it in. When finished, flip it over, and ta-da - absolutely utterly perfect and delicious popcorn - the best I've ever had. Didn't need salt or butter - it was fantastic right out of the machine. If it wasn't such a hassle to clean up afterwards, I certainly would have been making it several times a day. Instead I was making it every other day or so.

It was a sad sad day when I put that machine away to start Atkins. It hasn't come back out since. Though I will readily admit that the second I hit the appropriate rung, I will be measuring out 5g worth of popcorn, and savouring every last bite. I'm confidant that this journey by that point will have taught me enough about myself that I can appreciate the 5g worth of popcorn for what it is, and then put the machine away!
