  • Extended induction or OWL?

I have completed my two weeks induction, and lost 11 pounds. I have 49 left to go. I want to incorporate more foods into the diet for the rungs of OWL , but do not wish to up my carbs until I have less left to lose. Would this be an extended induction or owl?

    Thank you!

I'm afraid I'll get bored, as many do, and go nuts. I need some different foods, but I have a lot left to lose to go straight to a true OWL stage.

Well if you incorporate more foods then you're doing OWL. I guess you can do OWL for more food variety but keep your carbs at 20 per day.

The first rung is more carbs of the veggies you are allowed during induction. You have to climb the OWL rungs in order...you can't just jump to the rung that you would like to start eating.

Extended Induction just means you are still eating Induction List Foods at Induction Carb levels longer than the initial 14 days. Nothing more, nothing less. So if you're eating your Induction level carbs and eating strawberries, apples, or whole wheat bread, you aren't doing "Extended Induction" and shouldn't be telling anyone you are still on Atkins Induction because the Induction Rules are very specific about eating only what's on the list.

"Modified OWL" means you are staying at Induction Level Carbs but adding OWL foods, following the OWL Rules. If you do this your weight loss issues are more OWL-related and it would be more appropriate to post them on the OWL board because they would be addresses more appropriately and you won't confuse the folks who are doing the Extended Induction.

In either case, you will have to move onto a regular OWL and Pre-Maintenance phase. And there's the tiny fact that some folks experience a weight loss stall on both Extended Induction and Modified OWL only to have their weight loss pick up once they begin adding carbs. That's lead me to believe that the only people who truly benefit from either Extended Induction or Modified OWL are those who are extremely obese and/or extremely metabolically resistant to weight loss (check the chart in Chapter 12 or 13 to see what's your degree of metabolic resistance to weight loss).

While I appreciate your points, and thank you very much for them, I would like to point out that finding out was my intention for asking the question, and I do not, nor have I ever, tried to "confuse anyone". This will help with my "confusion", and that's all. The end. Thank you for your response.

Oh dear, I'm sorry you took that the wrong way....

I just meant that OWL is a separate phase and that ADBB is arranged specifically to address each phase.

Frankly, I'm happy you brought this particular question up in this forum, because some folks have the idea that "Extended Induction" means you don't have to follow the Induction Rules nor follow the Induction Foods list. Or that "Extended Induction" means you add OWL foods, while staying at Induction level carbs.

            Re: Extended induction or OWL?

how about taking the quiz in chapter 13 of your DANDR and then based on your answers and what Dr Atkins tells you they mean you will know if you should move to OWl or do extendeed induction.

Also don't fear OWL you can add back the rungs and carbs as slowly as you need to or want to. if you just want the first 4 rungs you can do that and sit there for a while. You just have to move to premeantenance when you are 5 to 10 pounds from goal.

Also remember Dr Atkins talkes about how the folk who do all the phases of his plan have the greatest success at keeping the weight off.

Think about Atkins like building a house you want a great strong foundation which is what induction is. But you also what good timbers for the framing which is what OWL is you test and retest those timbers ( that would be the foods in the rung food groups) making sure you have good solid timbers to hold up your roofing trusses ( that would be premaintnenance) so you can do the finishing work and move in in maintenance and not worry it is all going to be crashing back down on you ( that would be runaway cravings or worse yet out of contol eating and regaining)

Read the OWl stickies too for some very good info and know about the typo in DANDR
