Are you taking calcium suppliments? if so you may be over doing it. the body excretes excess calcium in the saliva and behind your lower front teeth is a big saliva pooling area during the night. the exces calcium calcifies the plaque on your teeth.

      Re: teeth

My dentist has me coming in every 3 months now for cleaning because I have 'tenacious tartar'!
They said that they've noticed a few folks on Atkins who have this but it's not every single person.
I got a Sonicare toothbrush for Christmas so hopefully that'll help.
I'll have to ask them about the calcium supplement but I took calcium for years before Atkins and they didn't say anything. It is that area behind my bottom front teeth that is the worst though.

9 months into Atkins, my cleaning was much more difficult than previous cleanings. The Sonicare toothbrush was pushed. I started using it 6 months ago and my cleaning last week was fine.

hey Moochiecat how much calcium was in the other foods you had when you were high carbing it? we get lots of natural calcium in our cheese and dairy, veggies, proteins too and many folk add calcium and magnesium for leg cramps are getting them in their Vit and add them cause they fear oesteoporosis too so we are literally ODing on calcium if we don't lower our intake somehow when we switch to Atkins.

I do have that problem. My mouth is superfunky when I wake up in the morning, but there's generally no problem after I brush.

              Re: teeth

I rarely ate dairy before Atkins...unless you count milk chocolate...lol... I eat cheese at least 4 to 5 times a week now, and have cream in my coffee instead of that fake french vanilla creamer stuff.
I'm thinking you hit the nail on the head with this, 2big..it sure explains the tartar.

I have the extra buildup of tartar on my bottom teeth too. I didn't realize it could be associated to my Low Carbing/extra calcium. Gosh!! You learn something everyday.
