  • Night after drinking regrets...

Ok, I've been doing sooo good with my diet and exercise even though I hit some kind of stall about a week and a half ago. Anyway, last night I went out w/ friends and had 3 (big) Captain and diet coke's... I got REALLY wasted and sick from that (I used to be able to drink WAY more)... so here are my questions:

Is it dangerous in any way to drink while on induction or does it just slow down weight loss? Also, how much will my drinking splurge mess up my induction?

Lastly, any tips on what to drink or how to avoid drinking in social situations? This is the one thing I really struggle with...

Thanks in advance for any help

So you've experienced the cheap date factor of Atkins... most people find they can stomach less alcohol on atkins.

You shouldn't drink any alcohol on induction - actually you shouldn't be drinking alcohol at all when you want to lose weight. The liver is busy processing alcohol instead of burning fats, when you drink, alcohol is used first before any other fuels. And even if you drink low-carbohydrate spirits (vodka, gin) these are still calories without nutrients.

Alcohol is on one of the rungs in OWL and you shouldn't drink before you reach that rung (actually, there is also a sticky about alcohol being taken out of the carb ladder altogether).

Have some mineral water / soda with a dash of lemon juice or lime juice, You can still sip your water and socialize. If somebody asks, tell them the truth - that you don't want to add useless calories to your diet, or tell them your meds don't allow drinking alcohol, But when you are out with friends I guess you should feel comfortable with them without drinking alcohol, anyway.

There's really nothing awkward in asking for "just a water, thank you" in my eyes.

If they're your true friends, a simple "That last time made me so sick I'm laying off for awhile" or "I don't feel like it tonight" should be sufficient. When I didn't want to drink, I simply had a diet coke instead. You can still have one without the booze! And as yemenitegreen said, it isn't allowed and is counter-productive on induction. The spirits level was more for using wine or spirits in cooking, anyway, not partying.

          Re: Night after drinking regrets...

A few years ago a member of the board posted about drinking too much and waking up with empty Frito and other junk food bags scattered around her, so there's that to take into consideration too.

You can order a diet coke with a slice of lemon or lime so that it looks like a drink if you have friends that are the types to bug you about it. They don't even have to know you aren't drinking.
Or, a little white lie like "I'm on some meds" or "My stomach is upset" as someone mentioned is fine as well, because people will shut up when it's something medical.

First off, I agree that would shouldnt drink until you hit that stage of OWL. Secondly, when you finally hit that stage, you cant drink the Captain!

Thanks for all the responses guys... I know that I need to work on this; it's just hard giving up my social life... Somehow I've got it installed in my brain that I can't have fun at a social function w/ out drinking... lol I 'm sure that sounds really bad, but it's true...

I have to say that I'm disappointed to hear that I can't have Captain at all - even in later phases! It's always been my drink of choice... Now that I think of it, it's probably best I let that one go! lol

I will admit though, I have actually noticed an increase in my cravings the last few days (it's been MUCH better today); I'm assuming that had to do w/ the alcohol consumption... something I should also keep in mind.

Thanks for all the great tips guys!

If you are talking about Captain Morgan's rum it's not 'loaded with carbs' I'm not sure where you got that info from?

White rum is 0 carbs, spiced rum has 1g.

What you have to be careful with are any 'flavoured' liquors. ie Coconut rum has carbs, it contains coconut liquers, liquers are high in sugar content. I've found Abosolute flavoured vodkas to be 0 carb they just have vodka and flavoring, but check the ingredients in other ones though... for example Smirnoffs cranberry vodka contains fructose. If they don't list the ingredients on the bottle, I don't buy them.

Also be careful with mixes and stick with diet pops. Tonic water, if not diet, has as many carbs as pop. Alot of people don't realize this...as it's bitter.

This website is an excellent tool for the carbs in foods:

                  http://www.calorieking.com/foods/

The nutritional info for 1 oz of 90 proof rum:

                  Total Fat 0 g 0%

                  Calcium 0 mg
                  Potassium 0.6 mg

and for 1 oz of captain Morgans spiced rum:

                  Calories 120 ( Kilojoules 502 )
                  Total Fat 0 g 0%
                  Saturated Fat 0 g 0%
                  Cholesterol 0 mg 0%
                  Sodium 13 mg 1%

                  Sugars -

I should add also that i realize that alcohol is not allowed on induction..but just clearing up the rum misconception.

                    Re: Night after drinking regrets...

I'm actually dealing with this imminently....on Saturday my friend is having a party....she was suppose to get married on Saturday and last year her and her BF broke up. So saturday is a 'Thank Gawd I didn't marry that *astard' party...haha. It's a girl's only party, and I'm a little nervous about the alcohol I know will be there. I don't plan on drinking there though...I 'almost' convinced myself to have a few because it was the end of my induction day. (good excuse, huh? lolol) but, I know it's not wise, and will most likely screw up all my hard work over the last 2 weeks. uh, uh....not going to do it!

I loooove diet coke and lime...so that will be my drink of choice. What I DO look forward to is watching all my friends make fools of themselves while I sit back and laugh...hehe. I'm so mean....

im going to be 18 so for me it's a different story. however... i feel like im in the same situation, sometimes even worse but most of the time im the driver anyway and knowing im on atkins, i prefer it usually. occasionally though, i will drink but i find that when i do drink on atkins... i drink A LOT less and feel great.. the morning after the scale isn't greedy either because i seem to either lose a lb. or stay the same. it's not about not feeling "cool" around my peers but sometimes it feels great to have that escape or just feel a little tipsy when i'm at a club.

                        Re: Night after drinking regrets...

You've read the book, you've heard the advice that alcohol is not acceptable until OWL. It doesn't stop weight loss, but it may slow it down as your body burns the alcohol before it burns fat.

Now, back to the real world. Some people are going to drink, no matter what rung they are on. You got some good advice here on your choices that will do the least damage. My drink of choice is white wine. It relaxes me. There are nights when my hips are hurting so bad that I can't get comfortable to sleep. Just one glass of wine and an Ibuprofen will usually do the trick.

A few months ago, I was fighting Candida (check out Candida board down a few). I did not have a drink of any kind for 6 weeks. We went out with friends to clubs and bars but I just had water. Yes it was hard but I was committed to killing the yeast! What did I tell my friends that were trying to pressure me? I told them I have an intestinal problem and that I couldn't have anything fermented, aged or processed. Like Moochie said, if you relate your excuse to a health problem, people will back off.

Use your best judgement. If you find that one night of drinking leads to another and another, you may need to re-evaluate your committment to your WOE and goals.

                        Hope this helps
