  • Face Breaking out--Antibotics question.

    Hello all!
Well the I have been doing atkins the last three weeks and have been doing well with my weight loss. I was down 16 lbs in the first two weeks and then have gained 2-3 lbs this week. Before I started the Atkins WOL I was dieting using the Nutri System low glycemic diet. I was sucessful using Nutri System but I was constantly thinking about food and hungry. Four months ago when I started Nutri System my face started breaking out...and was no longer smooth. I finally went to the doctor friday and he has put me on the antibiotic Clindamycin. He believes my breakout is due to diet change. Uuuuggghhhh... I have headaches, stomach problems, and a raging yeast infection from the meds. Anyone have any experience with this med? I have also gained 2 lbs.... anyone know if taking antibotics will cause stall/weight gains?

Sorry, no advice or experience of your problems but I just wanted to welcome you to our ADBB family

I do know that many people have posted that they have found that this WOE has helped get rid of facial blemishes for them.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Make sure you drink alot of water. My face cleared up with this woe, as did my Rosecea (skin condition that causes redness). I think cutting out the sugar and drinking so much water has helped.

Also if you have a yeast infection, it could be the yeast is not helping (and the antibiotics will aggrevate the yeast)... There is a forum here on yeast issues:

I think diet is very important for your skin, make sure also you are eating all of your veggies, and taking your supplements. It will only help.

I took antibiotics for acne as a teen...it didn't really work for me. Personally, I'd be worried about long term side effects. A cream like Retin-A or a topical anti-biotic gel would probably work a lot better! I use a scrub rinse with salicylic acid every day, and a salicylic gel, and it has helped my acne a lot. I no longer use prescription topical creams. But Retin-A definitely works and they have it in generic.

Medications can cause stalls/weight gain, but I don't know if this particular one does. Do some research. Did your prescription come with the info sheet? Mine always do.. tells side effects and stuff. If not, ask the pharmacist.

            Re: Face Breaking out--Antibotics question.

I found that in the first weeks of Atkins my body goes into detox mode and it uses all means of detoxing.. so the stuff it wants to get rid of leaves through the skin, too. It isn't pretty but it will be much better afterwards.

I don't think antibiotics will really help, in particular when you have a yeast infection caused by meds. Check back with your doctor to get rid of the yeast and maybe change your presription of meds.I second Jens opinion on the yeast infection, this may be the core of your problems.

Another idea which comes to mind is the hormonal chaos involved in losing fat - at least when you are a woman. Melting fat is setting free estrogenes, which might attribute to your changing skin, too. If you are usinga ny meds like BC, did you change something?

            Hope you are better soon,

I assume you are taking oral Clindamycin and not the topical. Both have some wonky side effects (Ive been on both). Be sure to watch your stomach problems. One of the side effects for oral clindamycin is that it can kill off the 'good bugs' in your gut, Doesnt happen a lot but it does happen. Thats the main one I remember from taking it. My dr constantly asked me if I was having bowel problems, its serious stuff. Im kinda surprised that your dr started you off on this particular antibiotic without having tried other orals or topicals in treatment. I know Clindamycin for myself was one of the last drugs I was given. Ive had skin problems pretty regularly the last few years (ugh. isnt it supposed to go away as an adult?) and the one constant that everyone seems to agree on is drink as much water as you can. We all know it flushes the gunk out of your body and it does the same with your skin.

The number one thing that I found that has elimated my zits is:

                    giving up all dairy.

For the past two weeks I have been doing an anti-candida(yeast) induction called gold standard. There is more info in our Candida forum at

It was almost straight away that any and all acne cleared up!

                      Re: Face Breaking out--Antibotics question.

I would have been able to throw out my topical acne medicine within the first months(but I didn't because I couldn't believe it was true) as my skin cleared up and has given me absolutely no problems for the two years I've been on Atkins. A minor miracle.
My periods also went from wildly irregular to ridiculously predictable...after a lifetime of weirdness that's a major miracle!

If you are willing to try this, why not go off the meds and see if it clears itself up? It might be rough for a bit(having bad skin is no fun at all, I know), but if it means getting yourself off of such a strong med, it would be worth it.
