  • Induction Diet Question

I will complete my 14 day induction on Monday but I plan to continue on extended induction for a while. I am analyzing my foods to make sure I am not getting hidden carbs and that I am following the plan exactly as I should. I have a few questions about induction. Are the Atkins shakes acceptable on Phase I. I know they aren't on the food list but it seems Dr. Atkins makes some references to use them to ward off cravings and hunger. I think he even uses them in a Sample menu.

I have read here on the board that you are supposed to drink an extra 8oz of water for each 25lb of weight you would like to lose. I cannot find any reference to this in DANDR. I have also read here that you should not eat cooked spinach on Phase I. Can someone give me some DANDR references on this?

    Many thanks.

    Happy to be loser!

    Re: Induction Diet Question

    Congrats on your great start.

not sure where you got the spinach eating thing. we measure the spinach before we cook it cause it cooks way down like Dr Atkins says in DANDR chapter 11 about measuring our vegies you would not be eating a cup of cooked spinach as your one cup veggies. I know from measuring the stuff I grow 1.5 cups cooks down to a heaping 1/4th cup without the water.

The shakes are in chapter 18 induction ans are manyother frankenfoods. part of a shake as a snack would be fine if you have an Atkins type one. We discourage folk from doing shakes as meals cause as you can see from the repeat slimfast program folk drinking a meal in a can only teaches you how to maintain your weight loss drinking a meal in a can. Induction is the time to lay the foundation of your eating for the rrest of your life. making healthy selections from the lists and having real food will help train you to do this as time goes by so when you arrive at goal you can handle a business breakfast or anything else life throws yourway and stay on your WOL for life.

    Happy low carbing.

      Re: Induction Diet Question

      Hi 2Big,

Thanks for your comments. I always find your post most informative. You seem to have this Atkins thing down to a tee.

Actually I had mis-read the post about the spinach. It was meassure them raw before cooking.

As for the water I have read that post several times. Does anyone know about it? According to the post I should be having about 128oz. I curently drink about 100+ oz a day which is sometimes tough.

      Thanks,
      Wayne

You got me there. Dr. Atkins recommends at least 8 glasses of pure water plus more under certain circumstances (exercises, warmer climates, etc).

However, I've Googled the 64oz + 8oz per 25lb formula, and I can't find it's source. I don't know who came up with the formula and how it was arrived at.

Can any one point to a study or at least someone claiming empirical evidence for this formula?

          Re: Induction Diet Question

there is an article in the FAQ about why you need water to lose weight and it came from there. remember just as lightweight folk need less fuel to do the same work they also need less fluids. if you are 25 pounds overweight you got 5000 more miles of just blood vessels to fill with fluid then a flyweight.

Unfortunately, I can't track down the source of the article that appears in the FAQ. While the FAQ is very clear in explaining the mechanics, I'm still at a loss as to whether or not the formula has been verified, or at least supported in some way by studies or at the very least, subject cases.

                Re: Induction Diet Question

The water formula is a 'cheat-sheet' version of the Holliday-Segar formula for daily fluid requirements.

Per the water formula, when I began Atkins at 240 (I'm rounding the number to make the math simplier), I had a goal of 130 pounds. So, I should have been drinking about 100 ounces of water (64 + 35 = 99) or 3.13 quarts.

Per the Holliday-Segar formula, 240 pounds = 109 kg. So I should have been drinking about 3.2-3.3 liters (3.3 quarts) per day.

                  Re: Induction Diet Question

and since DANDR water was mentioned Dr Atkins discussing staying well hydrated on page 251 and how it helps feeling satisfyingly full. In the chapter after chapter 11 induction when discussing weak feeling during week one of induction he said "Obviously, drinking lots of water is essential" in chapter 18 induction (yep i read that one and didn't like Martin Luther rip the offending chapter from my book) it says have at least 8 8 ounce glasses not only have 8 8 ounce glasses. so drink up.
