  • Isomalt.

Hi All, Greetings from Melbourne, Australia

Just a quick question (which may have been answered already, but cannot find it on this site) - What is the deal with Isomalt - more specifically those sugar free mints and lollies (sweets)?? They have 0g Carb, 0g Sugar etc. Are these things actually OK?? Here in Australia there is a brand called 'double d' and they dont have that dodgy sweetner thing (phenylane(sp)?) in it. So is it cool to have these once in a blue moon????

    Thanks

    Re: Isomalt.

I think isomalt is considered a sugar alcohol, although I'm not certain. It sounds kinda similar to sucralose though based on what I read here http://www.caloriecontrol.org/isomalt.html
Sugar alcohols don't agree with everybody gastro-intestinally and may cause stalls for others. We do watch our artificial sweetener intake to three servings per day as well. I guess the answer to your question is umm..proceed with caution. If sweet things are your nemisis, I'd advise staying away from them so you can kick that habit.
