  • Atkins Endulge Ice Cream

So I just saw this stuff at the store and couldn't resist, and yes, I know it's not good and we should avoid sugar alcohols, but it says 3g net carbs.

Anyway I had one serving yesterday and one today and then realized it's not induction appropriate.... after I read the small print on the box. I feel really horrible now, do you guys think it'll stall me?

We have no way of telling - the answer will become evident over the next few days, I am afraid. It may be that you have a fairly high CCLL and so even the carbs of the SA's in the ice cream hasnt put you out of ketosis!!

I would be more concerned about the actual ingredients in those 'treats' - was there milk product in them which is not allowed till the dairy rung of OWL?

Now you know it is not an appropriate food for your stage of Atkins try to put that mistake behind you and learn from it - ie dont buy or eat anything before looking at the ingredients and determining if they are all allowed!! Take a copy of the allowed list with you when you shop and have one in the kitchen to refer to before opening a pack of any 'suspect' food.

We all make mistakes when we are learning our new way of eating, so dont beat yourself up over it.

Are you missing things like icecream? Maybe it is time to move on into OWL at least to the dairy rung (after experimenting with the veggies rung of course) to be able to 'legally' have the occasional creamy dessert.

Look at the recipes section and forums for sweet but legal dishes, but remember Dr Atkins though of desserts as an occasional indulgence - not an everyday entitlement!!

      Re: Atkins Endulge Ice Cream

Thank you for your great advice, Elizellen. I just woke up today and according to the strips I'm still in ketosis, so that's good. My weight hasn't gone down according to the scale though, it's just the same as it was yesterday.

I do miss ice cream, but I'm definitely set on staying on extended induction... I feel like I still have a lot to lose before I'd feel comfortable moving to OWL... maybe another 10 pounds or so.

And yeah, cream is the initial ingredient but I also see other milk product listed... skim milk, etc. Definitely going to have to give that up for awhile longer.

I do have some Blue Bunny sugar free popsicles... they have sugar alcohol and are made with Splenda... 1g of net carbs. I don't see anything forbidden in the ingredients with these, are they okay?

The low carb counts of those sugar alcohol products are a debatable point!
Apparently the manufaturers claim that as they dont impact the body the same as ordinary sugar carbs that they are allowed to deduct them thus making them a low net carb product.

I have my doubts as many people have posted that they DO affect their blood sugars (diabetics can test their blood glucose level with their testing machines and know if this is true for them) and therefore should be counted as real carbs, making the small serving of icecream as highcarb as normal sugared products!

Personally I would count them all, so in the case of this product (Sugar Free Bomb Pop) http://www.bluebunny.com/ProductDeta...&productId=154
Total Carbohydrate 8g Dietary Fiber 2g Sugars 0g Sorbitol 2g
I would count each one as having 6 net carbs (8-2 fibre) not whatever magically low figure the makers claim.

I dont know if making your own ice lollies (popsicles) appeals to you, but it should be easy using 'atkins-legal' sweeteners and no sugar alcohols.

When we were young we used to make these all the time in the summer - even made flavoured ice cubes too!

But dont forget your 'up to 3 servings' of sweetener a day rule!!

Thanks for the advice again Eli...

This is the product in question... so are you saying I shouldn't count the sugar alcohol and that would make it 5g net carbs?

              Re: Atkins Endulge Ice Cream

We don't have those in Australia (Thank God for me)
We have low carb ice cream that is sweetened with Aspartame. Aspartame now gives me headaches, heart palpitations etc.

My advice, if you want to focus on losing weight, ditch that fake food, and keep the fake food for maintenance. By the time maintenance comes around, you may decide you don't need that stuff after all!

                Re: Atkins Endulge Ice Cream

I would only deduct the fibre carbs, making 5 net carbs per lolly. Too carb-expensive for me!

                  Re: Atkins Endulge Ice Cream

yep ditch the sweets remember they are what got you here to begine with. Sugar alcohols are those mythical magical counting noncounting carbs. If you know what threy are then you know they occur naturally in many fruits veggies and proteins but Dr Atkins never said anywhere we could subtract the sugar alcohols from regular foods or even listed them in his carb counter books and tables. The FDA told all low carb food makers when they wanted to count those as fiber NO cause they were metabolized in the body. the only carb we eat that isn't metabolized in the hman body is fiber both soluble and dietary or insuoluble. subtract that from your foods ands you will be a healthier smaller you too>

Dr Atkins had a great line about the dessert recipes being so rich in his books. he said to remeber desserts and sweets are occasional treats not every day events!
