I am getting differcent information on how many carbs there are in certain vegetables I am wondering about. I just want to know the net carbs( those are the ones you count on atkins, right?) and not the total carbs. Can someone help me out with the following veggies, thank you!

    1 cup of romaine lettuce
    1 cup of cucumber
    1 stalk of celery

Also, if anyone knows of a website I can use to figure out how many net carbs are in veggies, I would love to know!

    Re: carbs in veggies

I personally use FitDay.com for all my carb counts and tracking. So long as you stick to one source for your info, you should be alright.

    FWIW, fitday has-
    1 c shredded romaine-1.33g total carbs. 0.952 Fiber
1 cup sliced cucumber- 2.98 total carbs. 0.833 fiber
1 cup diced celery- 4.38 total carbs 2.04 fiber

In the rare instances that I cant find something on fitday, I use calorieking.com

I don't mean to hijack your post, just I have a similar question... I haven't been counting veggies individually at all. I have just been going by the 3 cups allowed off the legal food lists. Do you think this is ok?

      sorry, hijack over!

it doesn't matter what carb counter you use as long as you use that one consistantly.
And Malia yep you need to count those veggie carbs cause even with just 3 cups you can go overboard very easily.

              Re: carbs in veggies

so one cup of romaine lettuce has 0.378 according to fitday and on atkins site it says 0.4 carbs. So close enough, I'll just keep it at four. I was counting that the romaine lettuce had 1.3 carbs in a cup before but I dont think that was the net carbs.

If you use Fitday, remember you have to deduct the fibre. It doesn't do it for you.

                  Re: carbs in veggies

I checked my atkins book and in the back there is a whole section of carbs in foods. I checked for romaine lettuce and it says 1 cup is .4 carbs, so I'm a little confused, because during induction you can have up too 3 cups of veggies, well the only veggies I like to eat is salad so therefore my carb count for veggies for one day would only be 1.2 if I had all 3 cups. That is so low! Why can't I have more salad if the carb count is so low?

                    Re: carbs in veggies

You do need to eat other vegetables than lettuce to get more nutrients into you. What about the others on the 3-cup list? One cup of sweet red peppers chopped and mixed in with the lettuce will add interest and colour as well as 7 net carbs!!
                    From the rules of induction
                    3. Eat no more than 20 grams a day of carbohydrate, most of which must come in the form of salad greens and other vegetables. You can eat approximately three loosely packed cups of salad, or two cups of salad plus one cup of other vegetables (see Acceptable Foods).
So by limiting yourself to only 1.2 net carbs of veggies you are also limiting yourself to hardly any eggs, cheese, sweeteners etc as you are only allowed 1.1999999 carbs if you want to follow rule 3
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Yes, but what if you wanted to eat MORE veggies? More than the three cups and still stay under 20 total for the day?

                        Re: carbs in veggies

Best to stay on the 3 cups maximum during induction (only 14 days) then move to the first rung of the main weightloss phase of Atkins (OWL) and start adding more veggies.
One small effect of induction is to start teaching us about portion control and making the most of our veggies allowance by choosing better 'value' vegetables.

barb the rule says the majority of our carbs must come from our veggies. so if a person only has 1.2 carbs of veggies the can only have 1.19999999999999999999999999 carbs from all other sources if they are doing Atkins and following the rules.
