  • Why is my weight going up?

    I have been on Atkins since May 30th. This is my 2nd go around with Induction. Last year I did Atkins and lost 24 lbs then became over confident and gained it all back. My start weight this time was 190, my current weight yo-yo's between 170 and 175. I probably weigh myself far too often. I was so excited to get to 170. I am becoming depressed that I've stayed closer to the 175 mark. I am drinking about 100 oz of water per day. I am staying really strict to the induction mark. I eat a great deal of brocolli, spinach, and zuchinni. I am exercising on treadmill and/or eliptical trainer a minimum of 20 minutes per day. In addition I work out with Billy Blank work out tape 30 additional minutes per week. So why can't I get below 170

    Have you had your bodyfat analysed? At 5'8" I dont know how low a sensible weight for you would be.
    Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

    F/60 yrs/5ft 5.5" (Though due to collapsing vertebrae I am now only 5'3" - but I refuse to recalculate my BMI )

      No, I haven't. Is there any kind of formula I can use to determine ideal weight and/or body fat?

        Do a search on google for BMI, I also am 5'8. I started out at 176... I feel your pain. How much Broccoli and greens are you eating??? Just be sure to measure because I know when I started with Billy's workout I wasn't really loosing much weight but I was going down pant's sizes for sure.

          Wow! You said you started this time at 190 and have been doing this for about a month and you're at 175? You've lost 15 pounds in a month! That's awesome, especially starting as light as you did.

          If the exercise is fairly new, often the body will retain water initially as a defense mechanism to repair those muscles that you're working. Also, this could be a hormone-related thing (think TOM and all that jazz). Plus, the summer heat causes some to retain.

          I wouldnt' be surprised if you whoosh those pounds soon and take some more with it.

            On another note, let's say that you have gone from 190 lbs to 175, and have lost exactly 15 pounds in four weeks. That's 3.75 pounds a week for a month. Frankly, your body could be adjusting to this... this is radical loss. The body strives to maintain homeostasis (equilibrium in your life systems and metabolism), so it could be retaining water in your fat cells because it needs to adjust to this radical weight loss.

              Wow what a support system you guys are! Thank you all so much for your words of wisdom and great advice. I feel so loved. Congrats to all of you on your weight loss. I'm so motivated now. I love veggies. I'm eating at least my two cups of spinach and often a cup of brocolli. Maybe i'm eating too many veggies. Is that possible? Thank you for the info on BMI. I found a very helpful website that makes it easy to calculate BMI : http://nhlbisupport.com/bmi/ based on my height and weight I'm at 26.6 BMI. Next goal for BMI 22.8
