    I have heard it all before, too. Even just yesterday, someone told me they were doing WW and that I'd never keep weight off with Atkins. "It'll come right back on as soon as you go off it" I told him that the idea is to continue - to change your eating habits. That's when I got the lecture about how nothing that is all protien and fat and no veggies or fruit could be healthy. I told him he needed to read the book. Again.

    I also reminded him that I lost 50 pounds with the Atkins plan and kept it off for nearly 5 years until I had a radical change in my life. Now I'm back on track again and taking it off again. I can't wait to see where HE is in three months with WW. Ha!

    Also, my energy is through the roof now. That's not too strange unless you consider that I am totally off caffeine now and just a month ago I would absolutely drink an entire pot of high-test fog-lifter by myself EVERY DAY. The stranger thing is that with all that caffeine, I was anything but energetic. In fact, I was lethargic. Physically as well as mentally. I didn't even have headaches while getting off the caffeine. Actually, it wasn't like I "got off" it anyway. I just stopped. I have one or two cups of decaf in the morning, mostly because I love how is smells, and then water until I go to bed. On the occasion that I do want something different, it's a caffeine free diet coke, but that is really rare.

    Listen to your body. Once you're over the hump in the beginning, it's nothing but smooth sailing. My only problem at this moment is that I'm afraid to go off induction!!(In fact, I think I need to ask you guys about that!)

    Back to sensible eating again after a long time.

    1st goal: 10 pounds by July 1 (Met this goal on June 22)

    2nd goal: 25 pounds by July 29

    End goal: Who knows?

      People said the same thing to me. My best friend was always relaying messages from a dietician that worked in her office..."It's bad for your kidneys"..."Eating all that grease is bad for your heart"..."It's just so bad for you to be eating all that protein"
      It used to make me mad until one day, we went out for lunch and I had a huge chef's salad, and she started in on this. I turned to her and said, "You know what? You can tell her that I am eating WAY MORE vegetables and WAY LESS junk food on this diet than I ever have in my whole life! Then she can tell me how bad it is!" Not only did the messages from the dietician stop, my friend became a big champion of the low carb WOE! Once she saw how good I felt and how much weight I was losing, she never let anyone say anything bad about low carb diets in her hearing!
      Now, I did go off of the diet, but that was only my own fault. I hit a plateau and got discouraged. I didn't want to do the work required of journaling my food to figure out why I wasn't losing, and I didn't want to step up my exercise, so I see now that the only reason I fell off the wagon was laziness on my part.

        I also find this a bit funny. I don't eat a lot of fatty foods...simply because I have eliminated 2 meat groups (pork and beef) from my diet at least 20 years ago! With that said, I only eat chicken, turkey and fish. Unless these things are fried (and mind you, that is a personal decision), the only added "real" fat I get is from things like olive oil, salad dressings, avacados, etc...
        Eliminated processed things like sugar and white flour, etc... can only be good for you, whether you are on Atkins or allergic to glutten or a diabetic that cant have sugar! Atkins is how you make it...want lower cholesterol? Slow down on the cheese, etc.... Your choice in the end...

          Well, since we're all sharing numbers ... I got these back last month and hadn't posted them yet.

          The before numbers are from March 2004
          The after numbers are from July 2006 - six months after I started Atkins

          Total cholesterol
          Before Atkins - 160
          After Atkins - 176

          HDL (good) cholesterol
          Before - 55
          After - 76

          LDL (bad) cholesterol
          Before - 91
          After - 85

          LDL/HDL ratio (for women, 1.5 is 1/2 avg risk, 3.2 avg risk, 5.0 is 2X avg risk)
          Before 1.7
          After 1.1 <-- wow!

          I see no evidence that eating lots of whole, unprocessed food is causing health problems.

          Oh, and my body fat dropped from 32% to 25% in six months.

            The ironic part is...most people who say Atkins is unhealthy haven't even read the book ...yet they feel they know enough to say it's unhealthy.

              To add some more numbers, here's my numbers from last September and my last check up, my cholesterol was 145 and all the others had improved slightly too.

              I just took my BP the other day at the drug store and it was 123/60 (was 140/90 when I started Atkins!

              If people say it's unhealthy, I ask them how many servings of veggies and fruit they eat each day not including potatoes. Then I tell them how many I eat per day (6-9 servings) as well as how much weight I've lost, and that usually shuts them up.

              I'm also not a firm believe in cholesterol being a sole indicator of needing to eat low fat in order to prevent heart attacks. If you do some research, you will find that the studies they used to give this advice were faulty. I think it's good to keep an eye on your cholesterol, but I think things including refined carbs have just as much impact, if not more, on your levels. The Atkins WOE is proof of that.

                actually..I think alot of manufacturers feared atkins. They saw their garbage remaining on the shelf and all they care about is their bottom line not us succeeding!
