  • did this do me in?

I cant believe what I did but while handing my son a chocolate chip cookie one of the mini choc chips fell on the counter and I ....ate it suprisingly that didnt immediately lead to eating the entire bag of chips ahoy cookies

Of course that DID led to me going to get on the scale, seeing that it hasnt budged in a week, if nothing else i think i gained a lb. Then i thought, my excersize videos will be here in a few days, why dont i just stop for now and start back when i get those in.

And yep...That would have been my undoing, but I got on here and found my strength again. Ya think that one mini choc chip that was the size of half a pencil eraser knocked me outta ketosis?

Crazy how it only takes one little taste huh? learned my lesson.

I wouldnt even keep crap like that in the house but i have a carb and junk food addict husband who isnt very supportive and still buys all that crap. He could stand to loose quite a few himself but he still thinks he looks great, hahahaha. there's no bursting that bubble either, lol.

Luckily his attitude only makes me want to succeed more. I have a feeling when i am at my goal weight, he will start to look at himself more closely as well.

Oh anyway, so what do ya think about the choc chip?

I don't think a chocolate chip will kick you out of ketosis.

Not sure about the scale not budging...it happens to me too. Could be too much sodium, TOM, or "hidden carbs" you may not have noticed?

Good for you catching yourself! Tasting of something sweet is a risky thing to many, especially early on. In this case, 1 chip, you only took in a couple of bad carbs, not enough to hurt ketosis - just be sure and count them in your total; maybe skip an ounce or two of cheese today.

I had a similar 'whoa!' when I made a PBJ for my DS and without thinking licked the knife when I was done.

Re: did this do me in?

I realized when I started this woe that i have the worst habit of tasting things as I cook and licking spoons as I mix or serve. I have had to spit baked beans out a few times. LOL My Great Aunt told me a long time ago it was hard for women to not gain weight because they cooked and tasted their own cooking. She was so right in my case. I don't think those things really hurt us as long as we learn from it and try to change those bad habits of mindlessly putting things in our mouths.

Sugar and the taste of old foods can do crazy things to you. It's called a cephalic insulin reaction, where the body will release insulin just because it thinks you are going to need it. That can slow down weight loss. Not saying that for sure happened in your case, but the mind is a powerful tool in working for and against you. Good job in limiting it to just one.

Getting control of those formerly almost autonomic reactions to put food in your mouth is tough. It's like smokers giving up the physical motions of the habits as well.

I doubt seriously that the one chocolate chip knocked you out of ketosis.

but a better lesson learned here is....isn't it AMAZING what one little stinking chocolate chip can do to your brain and your physical body???? (the cephalic response kent talked about)

That's pretty darned scary to me. If one little chocolate chip can wreak that much havoc on your mind and your commitment...even if it's just for a few seconds...imagine what giving in and having a few would do...then a handful, then the whole bag, then the cookie dough...etc. etc. etc.

I'm proud of you for stickin to your guns afterward though and not giving into the cravings.

Re: did this do me in?

I learned very quickly how easy it was to "taste" as I was cooking and was amazed at just how much that added up.
Try chewing gum. Worked for me and stopped the "testing" habit.

Re: did this do me in?

Two days ago, I came into my office mid-morning after meeting with a client and noticed two fresh boxes of donuts on the table in the break room. I grabbed one, per habit, and got all the way back to my office before thinking "Dear God, what was I planning for this?" I tell ya, it was almost an out-of-body experience. I tossed the thing into the trash and had some cheese. It was a close call, and I'm grateful I woke out of my stupor in time. Crazy stuff.
