  • Ketosis Breath?

I have had the most horrible taste in my mouth all day. Have brushed my teeth 3 times but it doesnt get rid of it for long. I keep having to drink water but it comes right back. Is this the infamous bad breath from ketosis? Not sure what else it could be.

I found out just recently that ketosis breath tastes sweet -- like apples. If you are having a bad taste in your mouth it could be from coffee or something you ate earlier with garlic or onion possibly?

Best wishes on your journey to better health!

hmmmmm.... Didnt eat anything out of the ordinary, only thing is I dont think I drank enough water today. Not sure if that would effect it though.

Possibly. I've also read that your tongue will get that coating when you are not drinking enough water so that would seem to make your mouth taste icky.

Let us know if you experiment with drinking more water and how your breath turns out.

          Re: Ketosis Breath?

I hear ya on this one. Since starting Atkins I've had such bad breath. I wake up in the morning and immediately go brush my teeth but that doesn't seem to help much and then I end up brushing several times throught the day. I've never had the problem prior to Atkins so I just associated it with ketosis.

I know we're not really allowed to have breath mints so does anyone have any options other than brushing our teeth every 2 minutes?

the taste is actually ketone bodies in your salvia reacting with your tastebuds.

Ahhhhhhh, that makes sense. Strange how it just appeared outta no where. Probably hadnt noticed it before because I had been drinking all my water. Today is fine though.

I read on another lowcarb site that some ppl were putting a few drops of mint extract in their waterbottles to help with the breath. Said it also made the water taste nice. Would that be a alcohol though? But would a few drops per bottle of water hurt? Not sure. I havent had that much prob with it yet.

                  Re: Ketosis Breath?

ketones in your breath are not foul odor. that oder is from the off gassing of the volitol oils in the foods the person choses like garlic and onions or poor oral hygeine.

Seems I read a post, or story somewhere about keto-breath being ammonia from excess protein and is being exhaled. I have a first date next Saturday night, and I'm already nervous about potential keto-breath.

I use breath strips sometimes. They don't have any carbs. No one at home has said anything about my breath, but at work I figure if I notice I have it then maybe someone else will too. Nothing worse than being the one everyone flinches away from whenever you open your mouth. heee

                        Re: Ketosis Breath?

your ketone breath can to some people make them think you've been drinking. It happened to me.

Certain fresh foods can help to neutralise it: celery, parsley, fresh mint (or related herbs), tomato, licorice...asparagus(?) all are pleasant. Or of course, as was earlier suggested, more water is good, (it dilutes the ketones per breath), or you can drown them out with stronger odors (onion, garlic, spices).
