  • Lapse in judgement...

Well you can all Boo me.. I cheated.

It's Thanksgiving weekend here in Canada and I did up our Turkey today. I COOKED potatoes, corn, grilled peppers, stuffing, butter buns... etc.. All day I cooked...

Then I sat infront of my husband and Motherinlaw and only ate the Turkey because it was the only thing I could have...

The I cleaned up all the dishes, put away all the food, washed everyones plates...

    Then Pumpkin pie was served.

I had a peice. I don't know why I did it. I was bewitched. Everything else I said no to, everything else I stood there and cooked knowing I couldn't eat it.. but the pumpkin pie did me in.

40 grams carbs, 20 grams sugar for my peice of devil's food.

    Shame on me.

Hi Kittymama ~ now that you know how badly you feel for having cheated, you will definitely prepare better next time! Chalk it up to a learning experience! My suggestions would be (and this is for every meal and not just Thanksgiving) to go straight to the recipe board and print out a bunch of the yummy low carb side dishes that can be served with your turkey, or steak or chicken - whatever protein you will be having. You probably gave into the pumpkin pie because you were starving! Eating just turkey, there wasn't any fat to satiate your appetite and fill you up! Mock mashed potatoes would have been really good with the turkey and a small side salad would have rounded it out really well. You would have been full and you would have had your veggies!! It seems you thought of everyone but yourself. Remember, you are just as important!!

Jenny is right, we need to be kind to ourselves as much as we are to others.

Had a family member at that meal been following a different way of eating I bet you would have made sure you researched and prepared something yummy for them so they wouldnt feel left out!

So next time make sure you have made 'legal' substitute dishes that you CAN eat, and you wont have the same thing happen.

There are several 'legal' pumpkin recipes on this board, as well as some great vegetable suggestions. BTW I have grilled peppers all the time!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

I agree, you need to cook for you as well as your family!

At our dinner we had the usual turkey, potatos and dressing, but for the veggies we had mashed turnips, steamed cauliflower and broccoli, roasted squash and steamed green beans. I did'nt miss the potatos and dressing at all, and really there wouldn't have been room on my plate for them anyway with all the other sides I had!

I always volunteer to make the desert every year, this year I made a low carb pumpkin pie (it had a nut crust but you can make it crustless), and mini low carb cheesecakes in chocolate, pumpkin and plain (i'll be posting these recipes in the food chat section probably later tonight).

Pick back up right where you left of and consider this learning experience for next time.

Ooooh, I want those mini-cheesecake recipes Sadie!

I agree that you have to cook for yourself too. Aside from the rolls, potatoes and dressing, we had roasted asparagus and broccoli and mashed turnips. I made a mini pumpkin cheesecake thingy that I put s.f. whipped cream on for dessert. I wasn't stuffed and gassy and passed out on the couch afterwards. It was great! As long as the family has their dressing and mashed taters, they'll eat whatever other sides I decide to make.

Live and learn. You'll do great next time.

Let's look at the positive...you avoided ALL the other carb heavy dishes and only had one. Well, that's not all bad! You are learning real life lessons to last a lifetime. Pre-Atkins you would have eaten everything and felt lousy afterward, right? I bet you felt bad afterward, but I bet it was more mental than physical.
