  • Problems with Tomatoes & Onions?

    HI,

I am posting wondering if anyone has problems with onions and/or tomatoes.

On Saturday morning my scale said 141.2 and I was thrilled then we went out on our once a week date and went to appleby's and I had burbon steak with broccoli instead of the potatoes and they had onions and mushrooms. I gave half the onions and mushrooms to my husband (that was my only veggies for the day) and the next day my scales were up .8 pounds to 142.

Then my husband has been whinning and complainig about having to eat meat and veggies (I also fix him potatoes and bread) so I looked in the book and tomatoes are legal so I fixed chilli with extra hamburger but no beans.... I also used 1 onion and some celery and I also used some shredded cheese on top of mine.

Low and behold this morning the scales were up a whole pound to 143. I was just sick and looked at the label on the can tomatoes. It was just diced tomatoes with no addatives but it said there were 3 grams of sugar for a 1/2 cup serving. then I looked at the rotel and it said 4 grams of sugar for 1/2 cup serving. I used a can of each (3 servings each can) and the chilli was to last 2 days so I got less than 1 serving of each but I guess that could still explain the gain.

Anyway, tonight the big baby can eat leftover chilli without me because I put a pork roast in the crock pot and will go back to the plain meat and broccoli since I was having good luck with that.

    Bye Cindy

Tomatoes and onions have a relatively higher sugar content than the other veggies on the Induction list. So yes, they can affect some people, particularly if you aren't careful about measuring your portions.

      Thanks,

I could read the tomatoes can but had no way of knowing about the onions.

Try the USDA Nutrient Database for the veggies that don't come in cans or bags.

I eat tomatoes and onins regularly. (not on induction) They are a little higher carb but are also very good nutritionally. They could have been the reason for your weight gain but I doubt it. If it did cause the weight gain you are going to have a hard time with maintenance. Sometimes weight gains are a complete mystery. I gained 2 pounds this week while eating very well. However yesterday I ate some too salty food.

I would remember the weight gain but not conclude yet that it was tomatoes/onions.

What's the carb count for the bourbon steak? I think that the bourbon chicken has like, 28 grams of sugar...some of that stuff is injected with flavor enhancers or whatnot, and usually they contain hidden sugars and carbs.

Well maybe it was not burbon steak. Maybe it was burbon street steak. It was just a plain grilled steak so what ever carbs beef has that would be the carb count.

My carbs were a little higher those 2 days but still less than 20.

I don't have a problem with salt. I use to think I did and blamed all my weight gains on that while I was religiously doing weight watchers, but I have noticed since I started trying low carb that it is sugar that makes me swell up and not salt.

Every time I fix a soup or something that has a tomatoe base I gain but I blamed it on the seasoning packets with the chemicals and msg and all...but last night I did not use that. I just used salt, pepper and chilli powder so it had to have been the tomatoes and onions.

Today I am really watching what I eat and having no pre seasoned meats and will just have broccoli at supper like I was doing when I was doing so well, and maybe it will go back down.

Re: Problems with Tomatoes & Onions?

Hmm...makes me wonder if you have a reaction to tomatoes, an allergic reaction of sorts. Sometimes this way of eating brings out the most senstive things we don't see when we're chowing down on carbs. I'm allergic to MSG, so anything with that I stay far far away from it. It's a leading cause to swelling...ugh. lol..

Staying stray from the preseasoning is a good thing, but perhaps you can have fun in the kitchen with creating your own seasoning spices and such so you don't to fear giving up taste. Oregano, parsley, and garlic powder are a few staples along with a can of Morton's Nature Seasoning are in my kitchen.

Enjoy and have fun playing with your food. Don't give up! Just enjoy the differences!

Re: Problems with Tomatoes & Onions?

Yes I am going to have to get creative.

My husband just does not like the plain meat and veggies (even thought I fix him a bunch of extras and gravy) and he has been complaining. I use to make chicken soups but about all the ingredents are no nos for me.

I was thinking of just chicken, broth, spices and celery, green beans, okra, ect. Carrots, potatoes, corn, noodles ect are out.

I still plan on haveing tomatoes in the future, but maybe not as often and I will have to just plan on the scale jumping up on me afterwards if it turns out that is the problem.

I use to just not weigh for many many years but I mainly just ate junk and convience foods anyway so who knows if I had any problems.

                    UPDATE:

I really watched things yesterday and just had plain meat, mayo, eggs, and 1 serving of broccoli and lost 1 of the 1.8 pounds I gained so I am back to 142.

I still have a ways t go to get this fat off of my stomach and back but I am feeling much better today.

Today will be anotehr strict day watching the extra spices and high sugar veggies.

I get reaction to tomatoes. I don't think thay make me gain fat, but they sure make me hold water. And still I love them...

Re: Problems with Tomatoes & Onions?

The old Atkins book had tomatoes and onions as a no-no for induction. I find DANDR more lenient in terms of selection during Induction. I'm kind of avoiding/ severely limiting intake of them until I'm ready to come off Induction...

That is good to know. I am on OWL rung 1, but still try not to have things that I suspect will cause a gain. But sometimes you don't have much choice. I am fixing a soup tonight and will have to use a little onion becasue my husband will complain if I don't so I will just use half of one.

I use tomatoes and onion on induction, but mostly as flavoring. I drastically cut back on the amount of onion I use in a recipe. My husband will cook additional onion separately (for a "spaghetti" sauce or something) and add it to his. Mine has a small amount, his has alot more. We're both happy. Tomatoes, I use a slice or two on a salad, or 3-4 cherry tomatoes. Count the carbs though.

fresh onions give me a terrible headache and make me feel a little swollen the next day. If they are cooked really soft until transparent or if they are dried onions liek onion flakes they don't. Go figure. I am convinced they are the devil anyway. I haven't been eating tomatoes because I thought that naturally they have sugar. Technically, they are a fruit so I'm told.
